  • Witness to a drunk getting hauled in

Went to pick up my GF's son Zachary (15) after HS track, and on the way back we were behind a pickup truck that was following a Lumina Minivan. It's a 2 lane road, 45 mph, we were about 1/4 mile behind the truck in my Camaro. The truck was 1 or 2 cars lengths behind the van. (too close for me, I like to leave more room than that!)

The van was coming up on a curve to the right, when a Ford Taurus, coming from the other direction, started to spin out on the curve. When he tried to correct he swung over the other way into the van, hitting the van in the drivers door, and scraping down the side to the rear wheel, with the left rear corner of his bumper. Then he spun back the other way (he was coming right at us for a couple seconds! ) finally coming to rest in the ditch about 50 yards away from me.

The van stopped on the road. The pickup truck had to slam on his brakes and swerve a little to keep from rear ending the van, then went around him and left! (what a jerk!) I pulled over in a church parking lot and we went to see if we could help. The guy from the van was walking around looking at the damage, I told him to move his van off the road so no one else would hit him. The guy from the Ford was outside his car talking on his cell. When I asked him if he was all right he said yes and started rambling on about the accident. That's when I smelled the alcohol on his breath.

Sheriff showed up first, then the HP a few minutes later. Pretty quick response, but then I95 is only 2 miles away and they like to catch speeders getting onto Hwy70 off of I95, so there is usually an unmarked car around. (in other words, be careful if you're ever in the neighborhood ) They got the drunk into the HP car and kept him there while getting my statement and the other drivers info. Sheriff's Deputy told me they would have him blow at the county lockup since he had agreed to go there.

Another one off the roads. At least nobody got hurt. Its good for Zach to see that too, since he'll be getting his license next April. I think it makes a more lasting impression when he sees for himself how quickly things can get out of hand.

Y'all be careful, you never know what the idiot drivers around you are 'gonna do.

Yep, that was a great lesson for Zach. What better than a real life situation like that to show them the real consequences of driving drunk.

That is certainly a great lesson. Glad everyone was okay.

Do they just like to catch speeders coming OFF the highway? I drive down from CT to my cousin's place in Florida about once a year. I take 95 all the way down. When I hit the NC border, I just hammer it until I get to Savannah, GA (mostly because I don't want to see those @#&!% Pedro signs for too long).

I love driving the 95 corridor through the Carolinas. Nice and open, and I've only seen two troopers on that stretch. Am I just lucky? I'm probably going down again in May. Should I look more closely this time?

About a month ago, my office manager was hit by a drunk driver at 6pm on a Friday evening. Someone started a little early. Funny part is, she hit many cars on this two lane highway at long intervals. She was crossing over the centerline and glancing off of cars. The first car she hit was a police officer.

They mostly stay on HWY 70. The limit on HWY 70 is only 55 so it feels like you're barley moving after being on I95. I very rarley see any HP cars on I95 when I go to Virginia, and those have all been marked cars. The ones on 70 are mostly unmarked Crown Vics and SUVs.

I've been a victim off that unmarked car. Back when I use to make weekend runs home from Havelock, NC to here in Northen, VA. Then I got smart and started route 43 to Rocky Mount to catch I95.
