Went to pick up my GF's son Zachary (15) after HS track, and on the way back we were behind a pickup truck that was following a Lumina Minivan. It's a 2 lane road, 45 mph, we were about 1/4 mile behind the truck in my Camaro. The truck was 1 or 2 cars lengths behind the van. (too close for me, I like to leave more room than that!)
The van was coming up on a curve to the right, when a Ford Taurus, coming from the other direction, started to spin out on the curve. When he tried to correct he swung over the other way into the van, hitting the van in the drivers door, and scraping down the side to the rear wheel, with the left rear corner of his bumper. Then he spun back the other way (he was coming right at us for a couple seconds!
) finally coming to rest in the ditch about 50 yards away from me.
The van stopped on the road. The pickup truck had to slam on his brakes and swerve a little to keep from rear ending the van, then went around him and left! (what a jerk!) I pulled over in a church parking lot and we went to see if we could help. The guy from the van was walking around looking at the damage, I told him to move his van off the road so no one else would hit him. The guy from the Ford was outside his car talking on his cell. When I asked him if he was all right he said yes and started rambling on about the accident. That's when I smelled the alcohol on his breath.
Sheriff showed up first, then the HP a few minutes later. Pretty quick response, but then I95 is only 2 miles away and they like to catch speeders getting onto Hwy70 off of I95, so there is usually an unmarked car around. (in other words, be careful if you're ever in the neighborhood
) They got the drunk into the HP car and kept him there while getting my statement and the other drivers info. Sheriff's Deputy told me they would have him blow at the county lockup since he had agreed to go there.
Another one off the roads. At least nobody got hurt. Its good for Zach to see that too, since he'll be getting his license next April. I think it makes a more lasting impression when he sees for himself how quickly things can get out of hand.
Y'all be careful, you never know what the idiot drivers around you are 'gonna do.

Back when I use to make weekend runs home from Havelock, NC to here in Northen, VA. Then I got smart and started route 43 to Rocky Mount to catch I95.
