thats stoopid. for one, the court is not long enough to retrieve a top spin lob hit near the baseline..................

plus, the air is thinner making fatigue a factor.......

After our shellback initiation, we had the day off to barbeque and play football on the flightdeck. Those little narrow nets weren't all that comforting and apparently they didn't work too well for a few unlucky airmen as well.

I hear that. We had an AN get jet-washed over the side by a Tomcat, and he was lucky to get picked up by the guided missile frigate that always followed us around along with all the hungry sharks that ate the garbage we throwed overboard. My theory is that if you fell off, the nets might work, but anything blowing you off and you are going sideways too fast to hit the net.

On my WESTPAC from Alameda, we had a total of 6 deaths. A couple of suicides, a Tomcat crashed into the fantail one time while we were in rough seas in the Indian Ocean killing both pilots, a guy got cut in half on a weapons elevator, and we lost a AN overboard thanks to a Tomcat.

It wasn't uncommon for us to hear about AN's getting washed off, but I think he was the only one that they never recovered. Our guess was he was a shark sandwich.

That's why we played flag football! Well, there were the occasional tackles. That antiskid is no joke!

That and all those rivets. Some guys did get the road-rash blues from wiping out on the deck. It wasn't the usual kamikazee type football you play on an open field of grass, that's for sure. You didn't want to go out too far for a hail Mary pass, if you know what I mean. But usually the first serious casualty was the football, anyway.

Well, it started to take on water and they made every single guy run to the other side of the ship for ballast until the snipes could get over the side & get it fixed. That was CV-63, the Kittyhawk.

I'm glad all your suicide attempts were botched. I remember once we were headed for a pretty big storm in the Pacific on the way back from Pearl Harbor. It was supposed to be so nasty that they ordered all the smaller ships in our fleet to go around....we were going to head right through it.

They brought all the aircraft down to the hangar bay, closed all the big bay doors, and our Captain said that all the outside hatches were to be closed and that nobody was allowed on any outside areas. Well about an hour later, the ship (CVN 72 Abraham Lincoln) was listing so hard to one side, that one of buddies that worked way below in one of the JP5 pumping stations told me that they transferred something like 2.5 million gallons of JP5 all to one side to give some counter ballast. It didn't seem to work.

Despite the skipper's orders, we had to go see for ourselves just how bad this storm really was. There was a sponson that we would somtimes sneak off to and smoke. We opened the hatch and I couldn't believe how hard the wind was blowing and how the rain was literally going sideways. The swells were coming over the flightdeck! It was unreal.
