I know in Canada at age 16, your only able to apply for a G1 liscense. Which allows you only to drive between certain times (not night) and with a sober G-class driver with 5 years driving experience with the G liscense.

After 1 year you are elidgable to get your G2, which allows you to drive basicaly any G class vehicle and do whatever a G class driver can, except you must have a zero blood alchohal level and you must limit the # of passengers to the # of working seatbelts. However, you can obtain your G2 after only 8 months of having the G1 if you successfully complete the driver training course.

And finally, after a year of holding your G2, you can apply for the road test and get your G.

I know I had my G before my 18th birthday, but I was one of the quick ones...

So, there is 1 written test, which is the G1 and 2 road tests, which is the G2 & G.

I'm not sure if the US has this, but this would hopefully provide some much needed sense to the younger drivers out their. Although I can tell you, when I got my G2, I was still 16... and was I ready to take on an automobile bymyself? Probably not, but I did alright.

It depends on the state. Some have graduated liscensing and some don't. Pennsylvania adopted the policy of limiting times the driver can be out, number of passengers, etc a few years ago and studies so far have shown a sizeable decrease in the number of fatalities among young drivers here.

        I see I see...

Well, in Canada, most courses range from $350 - $500 depending on where you take it.

But what's also good is, if you pass the course you can use the certificate they give you as an insurance deductable. I'm not sure on the exact figure but I know it's atleast saving you $30/month. Which would be roughly $350/year, which is basicaly the cost of the course.

So, in one year you would make your money back... not that bad of a deal.

It helps but still dosn't stop young drivers doing stupid things, just last night in toronto two 18 yr olds driveing there parents mercedes were racing thru the streets where one hits a cab and kills the driver.

On the weekend I was having fun with 2 other cars on the highway with no other cars around but when I was aproching trafic I stoped and slowed down. One of the cars full of teens went into the trafic at 140-160kph I was like stupid... in city streets anything can happen you just dont know.

What has helped in Ontario is the new street racing law a couple of years ago. 5k fine, impound your car and I think some servere points or your licence suspended. They can even fine people doing 0-50kph (the legal speed) if you were racing to get there.

With the focus of alot more cars with alot more power to help boost car sales there will be alot more people getting into these situations.
