  • What do you do for a broken toe?

    Long story short/ the problem:
My toe is broken and I'm not sure what to do. Icing it to bring down the swelling is given, but now what? Tape it? To the best of my knowledge, there's not much you can do for a broken toe. Any advice would be great as I'm sick of it already and it's only the second day. Obviously it's not going to cure overnight, but anything to speed up the process. Thanks guys

    The story:
Yesterday was my first class as a member at my Muay Thai academy. I felt like a little kid on Christmas morning. They hold two adult classes on Mondays and Wednesdays and one on Fridays. Yesterday was Monday and I decided to go through both classes. While we're all training, we take the heavy bags down to make more room. When class is over, they're put back up. After the first class, I was hitting the bag, working on kicks, knees and punches. I threw a kick, then as I came down I wound up putting all of my weight onto the little toe on lmy left foot. I knew something didn't feel right. I went through the next class, then stayed after to hit the bags some more (in case you couldn't tell, I'm really into it). I noticed that my toe was swollen and turning purple. I figured it might be broken, but it didn't really hurt all that bad. By the time I got home, the whole thing was purple and it was extremely swollen. I can't move it. It's broken and looking at it makes me want to put someone through a wall. I'm extremely angry. At least it's something insignificant and I can still train. If it was the big toe, that would be a problem since you put more of your weight on that.

Just be easy on it. Might want to take a week off or so, it'll be worth it in the end man. I remember when I broke my toe. The one right next to the big toe. I went to kick my brother really hard, and he moved. I kicked the bed post all my might. Cracked, turned purple, and killed for days. It was extremely painful, I know how you must be feeling. I didn't do anything to it, just stayed off it and after about a week it felt a lot better. It eventually healed over. I wouldn't do any training though man. Unless yours really isn't broken. When mine was broken, just the pressure from walking would make extreme pain. I couldn't imagine even driving a stick shift, or doing martial arts training.

Well in Muay Thai, your basic stance puts 95% of your weight on your rear leg (which is luckily my right leg). You stay on the ball of your foot on the other leg, so there's really no pressure on it. You kick with your shin too, not your foot like many other martial arts. Tomorrow we work on punches too, so the only weight that will be on it is when I have to pivot. Also, I've learned that working the clutch with the ball of my foot right where the big toe is provides the most comfort. It's broken, no question about it, but I think I feel bone breaks in a slightly different manner than everyone else. When I broke my hand a few years ago, it didn't hurt. It tingled. It sucks, but you had it worse than I do. The first few toes take the most weight. The little one is just there for the ride basically. Then again, maybe I control my weight differently from everyone else.

How do I go about wrapping it? Everyone is telling me to, but I hate wrapping stuff on my limbs and digits.

When I broke my pinky toe in Aikido, I just taped it to another toe, for stabilization and took inflamatory meds. Didn't even bother with the doc... I just took it easy and was more restrained until I felt it was healed

When I broke my toe during a unground kick boxing tournament in mexico, I kicked a wall repeatedly with the suspect foot untill I passed out from pain. When I woke up walking on it didn't seem so bad compared to the hell I put myself through.

Yeah, I'm kidding. Put ice on it and take it easy for a few days. I've broked more toes and fingers then I care to remember. If you are a serious muay thai student I would get used to it. When you fight in UFC let me know and I'll cheer for you with some "dying fetus" (a death metal band guys, chill out.) playing in the background.

You don't do anything for a litle toe. That's the most worthless, in-the-way piece of anatomy always getting caught on the corner of some wall or furniture. I think I have probably broken both of mine before, but I don't know how you would tell or what to do about it. Anyway it heals fast- I bet you'll feel better in a few days.

Breaking a big toe is a real problem. Both of mine are a mess. One from when I jumped up to kick the top of a doorway and when I came down, somehow all my weight was on it and it swelled up and never got back to it's original size and it's stiff. The other one I pulverized back in high school during a football game. I was running out for a pass and I kicked a manhole cover which was sticking up. That caused a lightning bolt mark on the top of the toe, and I'm sure it was a convoluted fracture, but it eventually healed.

Hahaha, what type of high school has man hole covers on their football field? I'm sorry if I seem like i'm laughing at your misfortune but HAHAHA! Wow. Were the out of bounds lines curbs?

I broke two toes on my right foot while playing hockey a few years back. The skates I wear are extremely tight (I prefer them that way), and my toe hits the front of the skate. I slid into the boards and slammed my skate into the bottom. The mere shock of the hit broke both the big toe and the one next to it.

All I could do is ice it and wrap them together in tape. Keep off it as much as possible for the next two weeks.

That's weird man. I'm not into the UFC, but yesterday I was thinking of how awesome it would be to come out to "Praise the Lord (Opium of the Masses)" by Dying Fetus (if entrance music was required). I figure "Death In Fire" or "A Fury Divine" by Amon Amarth would be much better though. It's funny that we think alike

Thanks for the advice guys. I don't want to end up like my Judo sensei. Both of the big toes on his feet were crooked and weird looking. They bulged out on the sides too. He always used to tell us to be careful, or else we'd end up like him lol

I think he means that he was playing football with his friends while he was in high school. Not in a high school football game. I had to reread that one too lol
