  • Crashed the Jet pretty hard this morning.....

I've been playing around with another hobby of late....... flying radio controlled jets. I have a couple of them. I crashed an A-7 Corsair today in spectacular fashion. The pre-flight check was routine. The launch was typical, a very slight breeze but nothing dangerous. I manouvered the jet though a few warm up passes and decided it was time for some agressive moves. I rolled the plane over and went into a full power dive. The plane screemed up to speed and as I it pulled up you could see the wings flex..... they were doing their job. The plane was in the middle of doing a hard G pull up and as soon as the jet was parallel to the ground it happened. As a matter of fact it happened right in front of me. It was just like watching something in an airshow........The left wing buckled. It folded up starting at the fuselage. The plane was still under full power, it gently rolled over on it's back was ponting 180º from where it was previously heading and was in a flat fall. I immediatly cut power.......In my head I was yelling "MAYDAY, MAYDAY....... EJECT, EJECT!" If this were real life, the ejection seat would be firing straight toward the ground. No way the pilot would survive. The Corsair contined downward in a flat fall, striking the ground upside down, popping off the canopy and folding up the right rear stabilizer.

A spectacular crash that even though it seriously crunched the Corsair, it really looked like one of those captured on video airshow distasters only without the intense fireball. I was laughing harder than I was ing. There are a few replacements I am looking at. One is a FA-22 Raptor with twin motors, the other is Airforce One with Four. Either one is pricey enough that when you crash it, you it's just that flying these things is such a blast.

At least you have a good sense of humor about all of it. I laughed when I watched my T-Maxx's front suspension explode into a million pieces. What else can you do?

They have training stands now. It's a device that you attach to the bottom of the helo and it restricts the movement, allowing you to master the controls before flying it totally solo. It prevents the snap-quick out of control crashes mainly.

I was thinking the same thing. It was awesome. The controller for this one is a Megatech basic 2 channel with thrust. This is setup as a glider, so that if you get out of range it will glide down and land (hopefully). One of these got away from my son the other day and we found it about a quarter mile away unharmed. The glider arrangement I have my eye on is a twin motor FA-22 Raptor from over in the UK. It's pretty large and looks incredibly accurate.

the whole kit is over $600 from the UK, but there are a few rare times they are available here for a deal. These are pretty rare. They have a few other great planes too.

Do you have any real jet turbine planes?

I only fly ducted fans right now. I had a real jet and crashed it beyond repair. It literally turned itself into itty bitty pieces when it slammed into the side of a building at full throttle. It wasn't intentional but at the speed that it flew, a mistake can require alot of room to correct and I just couldn't save this one. It looked like a cruise missle from the Gulf War impacting on an Iraqi bunker. I'm going to stay with slower stuff for now so that my son can fly it...... so that means for now, I'm going to mess with ducted fan gliders. The electrics have come a long way in the last several years and some of them can still screm pretty well. Higher power units can do inside and outside loops. The only downside is shorter duration flights. They are a little more quiet too.

That about sums it up. Even modest invesments require constant funds to keep them flying. Figure in the couse of a year, easily spending double your starting costs. That's if you don't start going wacky with the upgrades. You will crash, you will break things and you'll have to buy replacement parts. even with electric the batteries need replacing, motors need replacing, wings, etc. You can still have a blast for relatively cheap dough. The biggest thing to keep in mind is that you want to get into something decent enough so that replacement parts are available. You don't want litteral throw aways that you must dispose of when something breaks. You can get relatively inexpensive starter outfits for under $100 that include a transmitter, engine, airplane etc.... everything needed to fly and have available replacement parts. I would seriously recommend something along those lines as a starter plane. Then once you have better skills, you can move up to the more expensive stuff.
