Back in about 1984 I used to bowl on a league. The bowling alley was underneath a shopping center so the entrance was on the end and naturally downhill because it was cutout for it. I parked the Dodge and went in. When I came out there was a shopping cart in 2 pieces laying beside my car. Somebody let it go and down the hill it went. It was going so fast and hit with such a force the hinged part came off of it and was laying to the side. There was a massive dent in the right rear of my car. And that was back when then they were real metal skins. I went in and the shopping center would not take responsibility for the cart. I called the insurance company and they said unless you can find who let the cart go your screwed because I didn't have full coverage. GRRR

A couple of weeks ago the family went to Target. There were carts everywhere. I made everybody get a cart and walk them in. I got 2 carts so between us we took 6 carts back in.

I have said something to people leaving their carts out before.

Don't tell anyone but years ago I pushed one with my car across the lot back to the entrance of the store. We were doing about 30. LOL. That's when I had the Dodge with real bumpers too.

it's simply lazy people who can't walk the carts back 20 feet to the rack. I used to be a cart boy at a store back when I was in highschool, so I've seen just about anything you can think of with carts.... I love the "hail mary", where people push them towards the cart rack from halfway across the parking lot. On a sloped parking lot In the wind

Oh yeah, I remember the day when my new custom Crew Cab Dually (black) was tagged by a shopping cart that blew across the lot. Caught the passenger door and put a softball sized dent right in the middle of it.

me: it sure is windy today.
lazy woman: yes it is. <starts to get in car>
me: are you going to just leave your cart there?
lw: yes. what, are you the cart police?
me: no, but i've got your plate number and car description so when that cart hits someone else's car, i will be able to provide them with your information so they can give you the bill for the damage.
lw: jesus christ, it's just a shopping cart.
me: that you wouldn't want bashing into your car and doing hundreds if not thousands of dollars in damage. who knows, if you put the cart back and other people see you doing it, it might start a revolution and everyone will start putting their carts back. <roll eyes>
          lw: <in a huff> fine. <takes cart back>

i just don't understand why people don't think about the carts doing damage. even a scratch can be several hundred dollars to fix depending on the paint. does it take that much out of their lives to be responsible and return the cart?

When I was 15, I worked at a grocery store (worked there right through high school and college). In my earlier days there, I was cart-boy. The strangest thing that ever happened while I was out there was during a rainstorm.

I was out getting carts, and it was pouring pretty hard. I figured people would be even less likely to return them. No big deal. I was used to it. I see this guy who collected four of them and was pushing them towards the rack. I was plesantly surprised. All of a sudden, he just starts running and let's them go, figuring they would make their way to the rack. Mind you, he was roughly 60 to 75 feet away from it when he released the carts.

Next thing you know, as could be predicted, all four carts separate like they were fired from a shotgun. Sure enough, two of them make hard contact with two different cars. One put a signifigant crack in the tail light of a Town Car, the other left a crease in the quarter panel of an S-10 Blazer.

I was close enough to the incident where I was able to get his plate number and description of his truck before he took off. I gave the info to the manager, and the people who owned the cars. The owner of the Town Car tried to blame me at first! I told her I'm not nearly smart enough to come up with that good a story so quickly. The guy denied ever even being at the store and it didn't matter anyway.

It just really doesn't surprise me anymore how inconsiderate some people can really be, that's why I try to do nice things, stuff people should normally do but don't, for people whenever I can. Small things, like i'll let a pedestrian cross the street in front of my car and stop for them in a shopping center, sure they have the right of way, but would it kill them to give a thank you wave and not just a dirty look like i was going to hit them or something at any second?! But i'm the same way, if i see a few shopping carts laying around, ill take 2 or 3 back to the rack with me.

Im so used to parking away by now that even in other cars i still do it, of course i always hear the "god, could you have parked further away?" From my girl friend, but i just answer with, yes...i could have, and when you see a shopping car plow into someones car...you'll know why better safe then sorry, and a little extra walking isnt going to hurt.

Guys at work always made fun of me when I parked the WS6 way out in the lot. We have a private lot, nothing around to hit you except other cars (those of my fellow plant employees) but I'd still park way out away from everyone else. They'd sometimes park right next to me way out in the lot just to try and pi$$ me off... they never understood the mentality. Since I've sold it, quite a few guys at work have had their cars smashed up by people trying to back into spaces or opening their doors. Heck, my minivan got the drivers side door crushed in by someone trying to pull into a spot! (not at work) How the heck do you manage that? They, of course, left without ever saying anything or leaving a note so I'm left to pick up the bill. Typical. And they wonder why I parked way out there.

I have a good friend of mine that lambastes me every time we go anywhere when I drive. I'll drive by several spots up front, and park out in the middle of nowhere. I do this with any car I drive just out of habit. Even my '91 Bravada daily driver. I always offer to drop my buddy off in front of the store like a woman. He obviously declines, but gripes the entire walk from the car to the store.

A little walking never hurt anyone.
