if i recall my factory spec numbers right (don't quote me) i belive the stright 6 will produce way more torque but has a much lower rev point then the V6. but im not a hundred precent positive.
the straight 6 does produce more low end torque. the old ford 300cid straight 6 was stump pulling grunting bear.....our forest service people loved it over a v8 for mud and stuff...
its possible to get some good hp out of the straight 6 too, look at gm's envoy and trailblazer, 275hp..... 4.2L...
i wish somebody would tap the v6 for more power in some of these cars as well.
I think the primary advantage of the V6 is the fact that it is a lot shorter than a straight 6, and fits in a smaller engine compartment. Depending on the angle the two banks of the "V" make with each other, balancing the engine for smooth power delivery can be a real problem.
Older people may remember the Pontiac Straight-8 flathead.

Strait six makes alot of power. Supra, skyline, etc. My favorite was the slant six in the tugs that we use to pull Harriers with. Very good for wheelies
