I'm not a fan of that. I guess I don't like the idea of stuff getting broke loose via solvents. What I've done in the past is several oil changes within a couple hundred miles and that seems to do a decent job of cleaning out an engine.

Now here's something really wierd.......... I started up the 94 again to trace the noise. It started right up, tapped for a couple of seconds and returned to normal. Nothing I could do to make the noise reappear. Test drove it, she ran just fine. I'm not going to knock it. Best guess is a lifter was sticking.
Could be a loose rocker arm.

Drove it to work and around town for a total of 55 miles and no problems.

If a rocker arm is just slightly loose, you may only hear it at startup before the lifter gets pumped up. Could also be a lifter that is starting to collapse.

It wouldn't hurt to pull the valve covers and just re-adjust all 16 rockers. Quick and easy insurance.

At first, that's what I thought it was. On the first startup, I grabbed my old faithful 1/2 breaker bar and used it as a stethescope. It was indeed from the top end on the passenger side. I just shut it off to mess with it later in the day. When I got around to it, I started it again and the tap was as before. I brought the revs up and the tap increased in speed but not intensity. I came back to idle, the tap disappeared. Since then I've driven it daily, put about 140 miles on it, various multi-start trips and no sign of any problem either cold or hot. No valvetrain noise, it runs flawless. I'm curious what I'll find when I pull the rocker covers. I'm almost afraid.
