Everone has to bring there own wood,if ur younger than 18 u can break smaller wood that's easier to break,he just tells u the size and that it has to be pine, mine was 12x12,it is unfair for the people that dont cheat,I was the only one that didn't out of my friends, and they broke the boards much faster then me,

I think it depends on the facility at which you are training/testing. I remember a number of years ago a work colleague griping because he had to pay $XX for the instructor's time and "materials" and didn't pass his test.

Anyway, how on Earth does breaking 30 pieces of wood prove anything? Wood doesn't hit back, plus it's just wasteful. I could understand sparring and maybe forms (katas), hitting pads or a bag or something like that. To me, this would be like getting a black belt for shadow boxing.

You know where you stand without an additional stripe on your belt, right? Why risk injuring yourself? I think it's things like this which cause people to hate Jigoro Kano for inventing the belt system in the first place. People lose sight of the art and the point of the art itself and become obsessed with belts. Don't risk injuring yourself because you need a second stripe on your belt. That's my take on it anyhow. If you're that into it, ask someone else who's found a way to make the wood break more easily.

This reminds me of a comic I saw a while back-

I was for someone to point that out.
