Hello all, I have had a nagging problem with my SES light coming on ever since I bought my car as a temp. replacement for my firebird in Feb.
Car Specifics: 95 grand am 3.1 engine, 170k (kilometers).
New rad, replaced spark plugs and wires, new air filter, new egr valve.
Problem: Only when I go on the highway, never in the city, my SES light comes on. The time on the highway varries and it totaly seems at random (nothing seems to cause it like accelerating or breaking or coasting, hard acceleration or normal, it seems random).
I had it scanned a few times and it throws a code for the EGR valve so I replaced it with a new one however the problem never went away and just thew another code for a different solenoid on the EGR valve. I even had the mechanic scan the car while on the highway but nothing seemed odd (light didn't come on then).
Since then I have removed my EGR valve and cleaned the surfaces (both sides of mounting flange) and replaced the gaskets. It seems that if I unplug the EGR valve and the battery for an extended period of time it takes longer on the highway to trigger the SES light. I drove a good hour on the highway and nothing (the longest trip w/o the light comming on) however when I stopped for 20 mins then went back on the highway within 10 mins it came on.
I realy don't know what to do, I don't want to spend a ton of cash on this car to fix it and I am running out of options on what I should do. My mechanic said dont worry about it and drive it but I don't want to drive the car on the highway alot with the SES light on. Nothing was glowing red though last night while driving for a while on the highway with the light on.
I have another problem but this one is the one that bugs me the most, I may ask about this one later.
can anyone please help me.
