It's common knowledge that Ford markets the mustang as a "disposable" vehicle specifically targeted to Women. The reason it is considered a "disposable" vehicle is that according to Ford, women will simply trade the car when things start to go wrong where men will contine to fix the small problems. Demographics research shows that on average, men hold on to a car for roughly twice as long as women.

So by Ford's own admission, the Mustang is supposed to be a cute secretary's car and when things go wrong, it expected to be traded. That's where the men come along and buy a used up mustang and throw modifications and new parts into the car for a bargain bruiser.
