now the v6 says gas mileage.......
yet, look at Joes ride...... the Buick twin turbo v6 killed just about everything on the street the year it came out......... then suddenly vanished hmmmmmmmm.

      Couple things......

The engine continued but the platform had already been scheduled to go away. GM had already made the decision to downsize the G-body and was shifting to front wheel drive. The last your of 87 was so popular for these cars that the production run lasted well into '88 with all GNs tagged as an '87. All '88s were front wheel drive, the platform and FWD trans could not handle the power yet.

The other thing was a political fight within GM. The Corvette has getting toasted by the GNs and that didn't sit well with the execs that pinned the Corvette as the top performer. The Corvette guys were screaming, the Buick guys were snickering, and that was the end. A bunch of extra motors were still in GMs locker, the heads were swapped to the FWD casting but installed in a limited run of '89 Turbo TransAm Pace cars. Those were the last hurrah for the buick engine as once again, the Corvette got toasted.

Another reason is for the motor to go away was emissions. These aren't exactly a clean start up as far as emissions and with the ever tightening regulations, GM decided to stick with the V8s for the time being until the newer version with a roots type supercharger was ready to take it's place. By then, a more robust FWD transmission was implimented as well and the package found it's way into many models, most notable was the Grand Prix.

Fuel mileage in the Turbo 3.8 isn't really that great either. 24 mpg on the highway is about all you'll see. If you have a lead foot, it's a fuel pig just like any other performance car. The newer generation of cars like the new V6 in the mustrag are much more effecient. But...... my mid 90s vettes could get 31 mpg highway when driven conservatively so even by the mid 90s the fuel consuption was increasing by a decent margin. It makes me think the new Mustang should get even better than 31 mpg.

Oh...... single turbo there Ken. there was never a twin turbo option unless someone did it themselves. One was really all that was needed.

Interesting side-note: Once they're warmed up, they burn pretty clean. When I saw the results of the last smog check, I couldn't believe how low the numbers were. It kind of frustrates me that CA considers it a high-emissions vehicle.
