Well, yeah- if you are going to buy new, I guess. Post up the list prices of the ZL-1 Camaro, or even just a nicely optioned convertible. Then compare that to a lightly used, 2 or 3 year-old ZO6... To me, it is all about value for your money.
2001 Z28 A4 - 160 deg t-stat, 3.42 gears, WS6 sway bars, rear springs and shocks, UMI SFC's, Torque Arm and STB, leather Firebird seats, Borla, SLP Y-pipe and lid, ZO6 cam and springs - 332 RWHP and 346 RWTQ, not bad for 'almost stock' - work in progress

I'm in a bad spot. I plan to replace my 2004 GTP in the next couple years and am having a hard time finding cars that fit what I'm looking for. I'm done with front wheel drive. I love a lot of things about my GTP, but the lack of traction from a stop and understeer really annoy me.

Ideally, my replacement would be a midsize or smaller rear wheel drive sedan or hatch with four doors. If it's a sedan I'd want a fold down seat to maximize interior storage. I'll likely buy used as I don't want to spend much over $25k.

The G8 is a close fit, but the rear seat doesn't fold. I'll test drive a Mazdaspeed 3 for kicks. I've heard they're hard to launch. The Chrysler cars, while nice, are too big and heavy for my tastes.

So, right now, I'm considering a 3 series. Their newer twin turbo I6 puts down enough power, but they have some serious reliability problems with the high pressure fuel pump. The newer N55 engine supposedly cures this, but is too new and therefore expensive. So, maybe a 328i will suffice. It still does 6.5 sec to 60 even with the power deficit.

The next best thing would be a 3.6 DI CTS. I love the styling, but it's a little ostentatious for me. Performance would be about the same as a 328i, but it's a bit bigger.

I, in my cheapness, was looking recently at a former P.D. hemi Charger. Nice car, the suspension was light years ahead of the Camaro, the power was similar. Incredible ride, smooth, compliant. I was thinking about getting rid of the Z to have a 4-door and a real trunk, but the bride shot me down. Not sure if the back seat folded, but the police model had no console, and wonderfully supportive seats. Definitely on my radar- I like the G8, too, but they are still commanding big money. I can't wait to try the new Holden Caprice police car when they get here- if some local P.D.'s buy some, then retire them in a couple years I will probably be in line...
