I was going to use a new 3.75" cast crank from Eagle that is rated to 500 hp. It balances the same as a stock LT1 crank, too.
Tracy, the 3.875" cranks are the exact same price as the 3.75" cranks. And every manufacturer that makes LT1 crank makes them in both strokes so I'm not sure what you mean by they are harder to find. Every speed shop that stocks a 3.75" crank will also stock a 3.875".

Your stock 5.7" PM connecting rods should not be used for a 383, 396, or a 409. Due to the lower location of the wrist pin location on a 5.7" rod, there is much more side loading on the side and skirt of the piston with any increased stroke. An aftermarket 6" rod should be used with any stroker.

There is a little more clearancing to the block and oil pan needed but, the stock oil pan can be used with a litle modification. Seen it done time and time again with no problems.

I know you are trying to save money, but you really need to consider using the right parts.

Build it once, and build it right.

        OK.... how about this?

This crank 3.875" forged crank: Eagle # 435338756000 LINK

        These 6" rods: Eagle # SIR6000BPLW LINK

Will the rods need to be clearanced for the cam? they have rods that are already CNC machined for cam clearance, but they are $500.

Have you considered using a Scat crank and rods. They are cheaper and will work just fine in a mild N/A stroker. Which pistons were you planning on using?

Sometimes rods have to be clearanced and sometimes they don't. Even with the same parts, every engine is different.

With a budget stroker in mind, I would urge you to call stokerkits.com. They can put togther a Scat 383 shortblock for you for probably less than 3k. All you have to do is bolt o the heads, intake, and all other external stuff.

Were you planning on just ordering the rotating assembly and having a local machine shop do all the work?

Yes I was planning on ordering the rotating assembly and having it assemble here.

Skat, huh. Strokerkits.com.... I'll have to check them out. Can you send me some 396 links with recommendations?

How do you plan on driving this new motor? Cruising with the occasional hammer down, street/strip performer, weekend warrior, etc.?

After you talk to strokerkits.com, let me the price they quote you for a 383 or 396 complete shortblock shipped to your door.

I really don't know any 396 links to rotating assemblies, but any body online selling a 383 RA will also have a 396 RA.

I've already got a low mile 4-bolt shortblock to rebuild, So I'd rather not buy a whole motor assembled. It'll be a while until I start building the motor, I'm blowing my $$ on the R/A hood and Borla this spring. Maybe this fall? I need to learn as much as possible in the meanwhile. Teach me, Oh wise one!

I saved a ton. Everything but the hood shipped for free, and the hood was only $75.00

I havent been this excited about a project since I bought the car! I can't wait to see it all together! It's going to be one of the best looking Camaros around, IMO.

sounds like you made out great. I just had some similar experience putting gears and a CAI in. A buddys dad did the gears cheap and I found the CAI on ebay. Makes you even happier when you save some cash in the process.

Also, if you are working on a budget sometimes it works out better because you research things so thoroughly....mainly because you can't buy them!

                              Have fun, man.
