  • NFB: "Full Throttle" and 14-second Buick GN's

Since we appear to be doing TV show reviews , anyone watch Full Throttle (2/16, History channel), and their 2-day rebuilds by two competing teams of matching 85 Buick GN's? After upgrading to a larger turbo, upgraded (race-only) exhaust, and a new MSD DIS-4 ignition system, the first car managed something like 14.4 @ 97mph on the first pass, and a blazing 14.8 on the second pass (they didn't even mention the mph). The second/losing car pulled a 17.8 on the first pass, and would not run for a second pass. Admittedly, the "teams" seemed to have little mechanical skills, had never seen turbos before, and had apparently never driven a car down the 1/4-mile. But even the help of an instructor from the Frank Hawley drag racing school didn't improve things.

The whole show seemed unbelievably amateur, and pointless.... an embarassment for the GN/GNX. The high point was a video loop that got played about 20 times during the show that included a GN pulling an 85deg wheel stand, and dropping hard enough for the entire undercarriage to leave a trail of sparks down the track.

I agree.... keep in mind they were playing with hot air cars (no intercooler). They are down on power compared to the 86 /87 cars.

Yeah, i saw that one a couple months ago or so. I couldn't believe the times they were pulling, I expected better. Granted like joe said, no intercooler, but still...

Did anyone happen to see the one with the 2 Irocs (I want to say 89). They supercharged them and threw on a catback....runnin mid 13's i believe.

I saw a couple of episodes of that. Good stuff! I was surprised by the GN's but also, anyone see the one where they set up Caddy's with nitrous? With the nitrous, they were barely in the 14's

I wanted to see it last night, missed it. I ve seen the one with the caddies and mustangs, those guys might have some mechanical skills but on track they suck.

Only mid 14s in GNs? The MiniCooper episode was intersting, those things ride like gocarts.

I saw and recorded that episode. What a disappointment. They added the intercoolers, which was good. They never touched the PCM, which was bad. Very bad. Thus why they couldn't break outta the 14s. Had they added a custom chip (or gone to ATR ), they would've gotten more out of the cars. Very disappointing indeed
