  • OK, bummer, need advise on the '97 LT1 bottom end.

Well, last fall, I lost the O2 sensor (Driver Side) on the way back from Vegas. I really couldn't do much on the road so I dealt with the horrific rich condition and the cutting out all of the way home and parked it. Finally, a couple of weeks ago, I pulled it apart, changed the plugs (black and still wet with gas), and changed the O2. Now, the bummer, I changed the oil...their was over a quart of gas in there and it scrubbed the motor clean. The oil no longer looked like oil. It had the look and texture of freshly brewed Espresso with the fine smell of gas. It makes for a pretty nice dye as well, my funnel was dyed black in some places.

Anyhow, what do you think this did to the bearings? I am sitting here thinking of whether I should just drop the front saddle w/ motor, and rebuild it.

Should be okay - as long as there wasn't any knocking or ginding noises . . . .Since you just changed the oil, I would change it again in a week or so just to make sure all the residual from the gas is gone. I had no idea that a bad O2 sensor could do that! If mine go bad, I'm definitely going to change all of them right away - mine are still the original ones!

It was ugly, it started out as a rich condition which snow-balled into fouled plugs, which resulted in lots of black smoke, which resulted in the engine light flashing like a Christmas tree...all with 750 miles left to go before I arrived home. To top off this nightmare, I ran into one of the worst blizzards and road conditions possible going over the passes past Vail. To make matters worse, I had the "no snow allowed 315/35/17s" on the back of my car. So, my car kept cutting out and dying driving over the passes, 4" of snow pack and slush on the road in a Blizzard with 100lbs of beef from my sisters ranch in the back.

Oh, and my cats are full of carbon...pitch black on the inside so those will not last long.

I have no complaints though, the car brought me home!

I think you might be all right, you're just lucky it didn't blow. Remember to check your dipstick at least a couple times a week. Give it the sniffer test too. I usually check it while I fill up.

If I were you, I'd give myself an engine flush and change the oil again some time relatively soon just to be on the safe side.
