The new cars are nice and all, but they are outrageously expensive plus the are a real nightmare to work on. The old ones were far more affordable when they were new, and old iron is inexpensive to build and my hands don't look like Swiss Cheese when I am done working on them. For instance, My Edelbrock carb, Edelbrock intake, HEI, headers, and cam cost me less then $1,000 for my K5. Try doing that with a new car. Completely restoring my '68 Firebird will cost me less then building the motor and tranny in my '97
In addition, the Street Hemi cars, L71 & L88 Vettes, ZL1 cars, AC Cobra were some of the fastest cars ever made including the ones today. As far as handling, my last autocross outing witnessed a '72 Trans AM HO running the same times as the C5s and M3s. The original GT40 is still phenomenal, and the Vettes that won their class for 7 straight years is pretty darn good.
It is nice to have the efficiency of the new cars, but the old iron was pretty darn nice.
