i wouldnt event think about driving a 5 sec nitro funny car on the street.
question did you see the may 04 Hot Rod mag?? the "Hot Rod Pump Drags" rules were meat nhra saftey, DRIVE 30-50 MILES then run 3 passes on 15 gallons of 93. half of which will be burnt at the track the 50 fastest were pick and and bout half or less were low 9 sec cars some were even daily drivers the rest soildly in the 8s. some have a/c others its windows open.
as you said 'THe electronics in these cars allows them to run real tame on the street, then crank it up with the turn of a knob or flip of the switch.'

there are some classes that require evrything remain functional a/c included.
other reguire a 30-60minute cruise with police escort as a quailification, got to make it back to the track to race and they are running low 10 if not high 9s. street car/dailydriver would require at lest function window, lights, wipers, heater, power steering, maybe a/c depending location and decent milage.
my 79 malibu runs low 12s and get 20ish mpg i havent spent the money to replace the 26 year old a/c that was installed factory but everything else works including the original radio before i took it out. currently im working on changing the drivetrain to run in to the 10s and still get 20ish on pump if not more. most likely ill have to sets of tires dot drag and street for obvious reason.
as for exhaust im running 3 chambered flow on my bu and it louder than the almost straight pipes on my 84 1 ton p/u that i drive in jersey for the time being.
as for exhaust mods i tell them it so i run More effecient LESS smog. as for the truck it never came from the factory with mufflers or emissions out of state tag and millitary id helps out to....sometimes....

what do you run in your bird??? you runnig high 11 low 12s?

Having had the priviledge...er..... punishment of driving a steet driven high 8-low 9 second car, I can attest to the fact that they are few and far between. I could care less what people say, it is very rare to find someone that actually drives it on the street. I've seen guys point out their DOT tires, working accessories, etc.. and claim that it's a street car. 9 times out of 10 it's total BS as they trailer the cars to and from meets, park the trailer a block away, unload the car and cruise 1 block and pull into the parking lot of the meet. I know, I lived that routine 20 years ago. The only thing that has changed in the last 20 years is electronic fuel injection, computers and other elecronics that make the engines more streetable. Many "streeters" still pull their trailer into the parking lot down the block for a short hop to the meet. I used to drive mine on a semi daily basis, often putting a hundred miles on the car in a weekend of cruising. Yes it loaded up at a light, shook like bobble head doll, smelled of high octane race gas, could pull a serious wheelstand and got a couple gallons to the mile. On one particularly hot summer night, the sole of my shoe started to melt against the tin due to the close proximity to the header. My head would begin to pound from the sound of the exhaust, cops harassed me even when doing the speed limit, and the list goes on and on.

If 9 second cars are common, why don't we see more of them on a daily basis? Because they are a bear to keep streetable, they beat up the owners, and frankly and not pleasurable to drive when compared to so many other combinations. Even my GN which is tuned right now for low 10s is not as pleasurable to drive as it was when it was only a 12 second car. In actuality, I could turn up the wick for a high 9 second pass but have no desire to do so. Besides, it likely wouldn't last long as it's still a girdled 109 block. My 13.0 T/A is a blast to drive even though it's a comparitive slug. The drivability is far better and it will handle in the twisties quite nicely, something I challenge any supposed 9 second street car to do without catastrophic results.

I'm sure there a few examples of crazy folk like myself that will run them on the street, but I just don't see them except on rare occations like a meet. That doesn't make them street cars, it makes them a drag car with some resemblance of street functality....... to me that isn't a street car. That's a track car that you can occationally drive to and from the track.

i see what both of you are just because its doable doesnt mesn its realistic or logical.
anything more than 600hp in a 3000# chassis starts to get illogical and unrealistic as a daily driver. and the expense of fuel to run them

so in your opinions the new vettes and vipers shouldnt really be on the street course both are detuned replicas of the racing sibling runing low 12 for the vette(?) and low 11 for the snake.

just asking on the last part

If I remember correctly, the new Z06 is 500 hp at around 6 grand, 475 lb. ft. tq (not sure at what RPM's), and is a 3,130 lb. car. It ran an 11.5 @ 128 on stock street tires.

I'm a third party here, but I agree a little with both statements. I too have read articles in hot rod and what not about 8, 9, and 10 second supposedly daily driven cars. I remember reading about a first gen talon that ran high 8's that was supposedly daily driven as well. The thing is, it is possible, but not probable. Also, if you had it, would you really want to drive it everyday.

Shoot, I know a guy who used to work with top fuels and got injured on the job. He got a huge settlement, and that combined with the fact he's single and had been saving alot of money, means he is now set for life. He has an 1,100 hp mustang gt that passes all emissions testing, and is "street legal". He can definitely take it out and cruise it for a while at a time too, but chooses not too. That's just way too much power necessary to get your groceries.

As for the vette and viper, I think the difference is that they are engineered to be daily driven cars. These are supposed to be dependable cars from the factory, and everything about them is specifically tuned for performance and reliability. I think comparing a vette to a heavily modded f-body is just apples to oranges IMO

New Vipers and Vettes are engineered to run on the street. They meet federal crash standards, they have tires and suspension that make emergency avoidance manouvers considerably more safe....... try stabbing the brakes and making a lane change with a typical pro-streeter and your front wheels turn into a taco while you try to keep the shiney side up. Comparing an 11 or 12 second Viper or Vette to a typical drag car is like comparing apples to oranges.

In my humble opinion, the Callaway Sledgehammer Corvette was the ultimate street car. Capable of awesome handling (over 1G) , a twin turbo V8 capable of over 200 mph, acceleration that flattens your eyeballs, yet you can drive it all day with the A/C on in the grandpa mode with no hiccups, no loading up at idle and no ill handling at speed, airbags, etc. The price of admission is steep, but in terms of raw performance it is an ultimate street car. I'll take two, please!

that or the late john lingfelter corvette.
4500 is peak torque for the zo6
course i wouldn't run 3" wide tire on a 3000# car on the street. but i have seen the roll the tire completly of the rim.
as for the apple and oranges yeah i kinda jump that one. goofed
i would drive it regularly specially in the summer but not every day. i have 84 dually i dont drive it day to day but at least once or twice a week but that what my 04 grand am is for day to day my 79 malibu and 92 camaro are getting up grade to the drive train and will be driven on a regular basis if they are in the same are im stationed in

I dont think there is anything unstreetable about the vette or the viper......or many of the 11 and 12 second rides on this forum......and maybe even some 10 sec (FRED!) 11's and 12's is very realistic for a street driven car, especially if youre talking power adder cars. My point was that when you start talking 8 and 9 second cars, thats a totally different ballpark. Theres a BIG difference between a stock viper and a 8 or 9 second trans am. THeres a line somewhere in there (thats different for different vehicles) that once its crossed, you really cant call it a driver anymore.....like Joe's GN. He wouldnt hop in that car to drive up and visit me in NY.....but his 13 sec. T/A might be an option. If my car had the additional 400 HP and the suspension/ driveline mods needed to run 8's or 9's, I wouldnt be driving it to work anymore.....and id probably be pulled over even more that I am now!

the crash rating are done at 40mph offset test. which is 40% of the bumper nailling what ever obsticale and full frontal some were less than 70 mph. if you running 9.99/135mph or faster u are required to have a full cage in the car that bring ur crash rating back up even if it is just a 4/6 point roll bar(required on car running 11.0-11.99) it still goes up
10.0-10.99 unaltered bodies can run roll bars
                            altered bodies require roll cage

as i said eairlier "basicly anything more than 600hp in a 3000# chassis starts to get illogical and unrealistic as a daily driver."
due to the fact of fuel cost that goes up with it. and drive train setups
