  • Core Plug Leak - need some tips

    Hey Everyone,

Tonight I dropped the oil pan on the Z and swapped
    oil pumps.

It seems the old one has grinding gears and feels
sloppy compared to the new one. I hope that's the
only cause of the low oil pressure, because I'd
sure hate to chase a clearance issue!

Anyway...the core plug (freeze/frost plug) behind
the starter is leaking. The system has never been
up to temperature so it's not even pressurized -
yet there is already coolant coming out around the
    core plug.

What can I do to correct this? I'm thinking RTV
silicone, but it may flake off.

Has anyone ever removed a core plug? If so, how?
    Drill it and pull???

    Thanks for any tips!

    whoa nelly

    Core plug?

Do you mean a freeze plug or the little drain plug?

You can remove the drain plug, clean it out,
use a little thread sealant and torque it back
on there. They are usually a PITA to remove.

If your mean the freeze plug, umm, I think thats best
    left for a shop?

Ohhhh...there's something you have to learn about me:

I do everything and anything to my cars if it's possible!

My best guess now is to knock it out with a driver of some sort,
then pull it out with channel locks (a tip someone gave me off
      another board).

It will be replaced with a fresh core plug and RTV.

If there's an easier method, feel free to post ...otherwise, that's
      the route I'm going tomorrow.

      Thanks and good night!

        It comes out easier if

you have room and can drill a hole in the middle to get a screwdriver in ther to pry up on it...

You may look and try to tap it in a little tighter before removing it and starting over....

But when you go to reinstall it RTV is always a good idea. Also make sure the sealing surface is clean and as smooth as possible.

Right on. That is exactly what I would have said.
