You can easily spend $1500 on heads alone. A good quality short block is a couple thousand. If you are rebuilding it you might as well make it a 383 and put a bigger cam in it. I figure $3000 for the shortblock and another $1500 for heads. $4500 should get it done very nicely.Tracy

Thanks for the help guys im just not sure I want to sacrifice gas mileage just yet. Im 17 and pay for everything on my own so i wouldnt be able to afford to drive it if I got 383 ( Although it would be about the baddest car in my neck of the woods) and I have the money to do it in my bank account from the money i made last summer

You could always take a portion of your cash and work on things you will need to do should you get a 383 that don't involve the motor and thus not messing with your gas mileage. You could upgrade the brakes, suspension, etc. Do a few of them and save the rest until you are ready.97 TA, M6, JBA ceramic coated headers, Borla Cat-back exhaust, 1.6 RR, 160 Thermo, LT4 knock sensor, CAI, Bils, Hotchkis all around, GT rotors, B&M shifter, Magnecor wires, Granatelli MAF
