  • Went back to the track.....

As some of you may remember, I started a thread not too long ago where I expressed how dissapointed I was with my 14.22 run after the mods I had done this winter. Most of you guys said that it was my 60' times that were hurting me, not to mention I was running at a notoriously poor track (it's close to home).

Well, yesterday I went to Norwalk raceway and the results shocked me.

Keep in mind since I ran that 14.22 I have had the car lowered, so I was positive I would not run any better than before........

WOW does a track make a difference......the LOWERED CAR HOOKED! I had four runs and they were all my best 60' times. I am amazed.

Here are the runs....keep in mind THE CAR IS LOWERED AND THE CONTROL ARMS HAVE NOT BEEN CORRECTED. These runs were also made on STREET TIRES!

    First Run

    60' 2.101

    1/8 9.060

1/4 14.001 At this point I am thinking I will never hit 13's

    trap 100.07

    Second

    60' 2.083

    1/8 9.370

    1/4 14.337

    trap 98.43

    Third (and best)

    60' 2.041

    1/8 8.963

    1/4 13.931

    trap 97.20

    Fourth

    60' 2.120

    1/8 9.003

    1/4 13.980

    trap 99.35

I am extremely happy. I am in the middle of my n2o install and can not wait to finish the suspension upgrades such as control arms and torque arm. I also plan on getting some drag radials.

Still can't believe this was done with a lowered car!

The only thing that's strange is I seemed to have lost 2 1/2 mile per hour over my normal runs which are usually in the 99-100.5 range. I haven heard that when you get wheel spin you sometimes trap a little higher.

Thanks for listening to me rant guys, I am very excited!

Just keep in mind, trap speed is an indication of HP. ET is an indication of traction. Most likely the engine was a little more heat soaked after the first run. The ET dropped as you found the best traction even though HP was a little down. Keep working at it and you'll gradually whittle down the times. Icing down the intake between runs helps the trap speed.

what happened on your second run? ... you had a great 60' time but it was your worst ET. Did the engine have some cool down time between runs? Problems with a shift? It seems like that had the potential to be a great run, and as you noted, there's even some more room for improvement since you'll be doing some suspension upgrades.

Lowered cars aren't near as bad at leaving the line as they are made out to be. Do they have the potential to leave as hard as a non-lowered car? Probably not, but nevertheless, they can still be setup to hook very hard. I have seen many f-bods at the track with Sportlines on the back cut some serious short times. You should hook even better once you get the LCA drop brackets and maybe an adjustable torque arm so that you can play with the pinion angle.

Yes, alot of times when you short time better, you will trap a little lower. But I would rather have a quicker ET than a fast trap speed.

What happended on the second run was quite simple..................8 minutes between runs!!!

What can I say...I wanted to get some runs in.

Getting in four on a Friday at Norwalk is nothing short of a miracle I hear!

              Jerry -

The club I am in rents Norwalk out 2 times a year. You can get in 30 runs if you want for $30. Our next meet is in October - check out Central Ohio F-Body at www.cofba.org. There are some new guys and lots of more experienced guys - it is a good mix. If not for the members of this club I would have stopped at a cat-back and lid

Before you get the nitrous in get an akmcable, and download ttsdatamaster.
If everything is good, then give the nitrous a shot on a dyno. Better to find out right away that you are not running too lean.

Went again last night and have to say that: it's official, a lowered car can hook up!

My worst 60' time was 2.056, which came ironically on my best run.

                    60'----2.056

                    1/8---8.901
                    1/8th--79.74mph

                    1000'---11.553

                    1/4----13.798
                    1/4mph----100.88

This run the car was it's coolest at the night. IT was still 80 degrees out when I ran. But by icing the intake I seemed to have picked up 2 MPH!

I've got to get the nitrous finished!!!!!!!!!!!

Jerry, I don't see anything in your sig about a fan switch or computer tuning to lower the fans. If your still running the stock t-stat and fan temps that could greatly help you from heat soaking it as much and would help you with more consistent times.

Plus now you have to edit your sig to show the new lowest time & highest mph!!

MadZ28 did the tune and lowered the fan temp.

I was really happy on my last trip when I ran a 13.93.

Yesterday, I did not have one time in the 13.90's, I was 13.80's or better all day, so the et's are getting better as I learn to be more consistent with my launch.

I am thinking about changing the thermostat though, which would problably help even more.

                            Last Night 7-29

Went out to Norwalk again. Place was absolutely packed! Car sat for three hours with ice on the intake before I got my one run in. However, I got my best run ever. It must have been the temp and humidity being much better than my past couple of trip out. It was only about 72 when we ran.

                            Here's the run:

I hazed the tires a little bit, ran 25 p.s.i., and used the trans perform button.

                            RT---.218

                            60'---2.022 (best ever)

                            330'---5.769

                            1/8--8.827
                            1/8 MPH---80.18

                            1000'---11.470

                            1/4----13.685 (best ever)
                            1/4 MPH---102.11 (best ever)

                            The MPH really surprised me!

For the experts out there, considering mods already installed, what do you think my next mod should be to improve these times even more. I am about finished with my nitrous install so take that off of the list.

Should I do headers? Y pipe? 1.6 rockers? Perhaps the time slip gives some idea as to areas for improvement??

I would suggest an extra pair of wheels and drag radials. That will lower your 60' resulting in an even quicker ET.
