Look at Greyhound dog racing. They used to take the dogs out and shoot them in the head, after they became no longer useful, and bury them in mass graves. Although, in the past several years, I think that there has been an effort by animal rights people to try to help find homes for the "retired" Greyhounds. I would imagine that some of these poor souls, do end up slipping through the cracks though, and go the same way as before-

This is simply disgusting. I can't even put into words how angry this makes me. If they find these people, Ken, let Keona in on what they did...

I'm disgusted and revolted, but I'm not surprised. (Warning! Preachy.)

This is my two cent's-worth, and it is not my intention to offend, but why are we surprised at the intentional cruelty inflicted by some of our species?

I need not go into detail, but just consider the barbarity some of our species have intentionally inflicted -- and inflict -- upon others of our own species.

Wars come immediately to mind, but wars per se are not what I mean. The absence of war is not necessarily peace but, rather, slavery.

For example, we need not have fought World War II. No, all we had to do was surrender to the twin obscenities of Nazi Germany and Imperial Japan. But it would have been moral cowardice -- as well as a sin -- to have allowed those evils to have conquered the world.

No, what I'm talking about is deliberate depravity that is tolerated and even excused by people who know better. The Rape of Nanking and the Holocaust are two such examples.

But why look so far back in history, or even at wars? Is there any possible justification for sucking the brain out of an about to be born baby? Yet it is done every day right here in this country and there are those -- perhaps even on this board -- who will not simply tolerate it, they will champion it.

Makes me sick. Just as someone being deliberately cruel to an animal makes me sick. But I'm no longer surprised.

My neighbor has a hound dog. Got him at an animal shelter. Someone had dropped him off with the following note attached: "He don't hunt no more." Sad. But he's been a nice family pet.

Why such indifference? It's been called the "banality of evil". And it's all around us.

Are any of us truly immune to it?

I'm not against hunting . . . for food. Or to control an out-of-control species (like whitetail deer, for instance). But not for sport. (True confession: This does not pertain to rats. Kill 'em. As quickly and humanely as possible, but kill them! They are the ancient enemy of mankind, and as a disease vector have caused untold misery to humanity for millennia.)

Dog racing? Bullfighting? Cock fights? No, no, no.

I hope the dog recovers. I hope the wretched bastard who caused this wanton cruelty and senseless suffering is found and prosecuted.

But I'm just not surprised that it happened.

We have a long, long way to go as a species.

        Here endeth the sermon.

P.S. Crocodiles as a sentient species? Hmmm. That's a bit of a stretch.

i used to show horses when i was younger, barrel racing, poles and pleasure. ive seen what people can do to horses, but keep in mind that these are the poeple that give everyone else a bad name. we never in any way abused our horses. theyre were part of our family.

i remember being at show, nothin big maybe 20 horses, and some guy parked close to our trailer. i was hangin out haveing lunch and was watching him TRY and get this horse out of then back, he had 2, one was putting up quite a fight and i figured it was a young horse and not used to shows and the people and lights and was probabaly scared. he went on for a while and eventually this horse came out. he quickly tied him and went to get the other, at this time im only have a** paying attention to him. what got my full attention was seeing his fist out of the corner of my eye flying towards this horses face. i didnt know what to do. its a shock when you witness something first hand. i set there and stared. (realize im young, like 12) i saw this man bring this horse to my side of his trailor and kick it in the stomach. ive always had a way of dealing with people. i went over and asked him wth he thought he was doing. he swore to me that this horse was crazy, psycho. hes going on and im looking at this horse in total disbelief. this time my friend had came over to see what was going on. i went to the shows with her and her husband and kids. this mare had blood running down both front legs, not a scratch, her hooves were covered in blood. she had a large gash down her face and the skin looked like it had rubbed off on something. we were drawing alot of peoples attention but he insisted this animal was crazy. i remember my hand on her halter and the look she had in her eyes, like her spirit was gone. i had my face turned toward her so no one could see me ing. my friend was looking her over and found blood and rocks on this horses stomach. i have never in my life seen an animal that was so abused. it still makes my stomach churn. my friend and her husband were looking to get another horse, i dont know why they did it, but im glad they did. we took that horse home for 200$ that night. to wrap up this story (sorry for the long post) this man didnt tie up either horse, or bother to latch the back of the trailor properly. the horse we bought was thrown out of the the trailer, beaten, put back in, again not properly restrained and fell out again. thank god he wasnt going any faster, he couldve easily killed both horses. its amazing this mare had only the wounds she did and didnt break her leg or her neck. apperently someone had stopped to help when the horse was thrown out the second time and were the same people who witnessed him beating this animal and called the police. he claimed she jumped out trying to kill herself and was a psychotic animal.
turned out to be one of the best horses we ever had. great with my friends children, not a mean bone in her body.

yeah its was aweful, i dunno if it was cause of the abuse she had or just a freak thing with her but we bred her 3 times, first 2 died b4 they were term. 3rd time she carried to term, delivered a beautiful colt just for it to die within an hour later. she was so depressed we didnt have the heart to breed her agian and have the same thing happen. i miss that horse soo much. id like to find her agian and buy her back.
