According the the story this morning on CNN, they were previously unarmed, but with recent events they are now armed.

The armed force is just much more visible now. They were not cops you'd usually see on the street. They'd be comparable to an american SWAT team, but now they are using them much more visibly. Most bobbies are still unarmed.
