  • New here, couple questions.

First I'll explain my situation.... I have a '95 Saturn SC2, it's fairly quick considering it's very lightly modded, I love the car to death, BUT, it cannot handle being abused. However, even if I baby it, it still falls apart on me. I can no longer afford to fix the car, so it has to go. Now ! I love trans-ams, especially the LS1. They're beastly, fast, beautiful, etc etc. However, like Saturn, they are another GM product, so to the point: Are LS1's (and I suppose LT1's) reliable? What common problems do they seem to have? Does the car need to be maintained on a constant basis, and most importantly, can it handle being ran hard? If you guys could help me out, I'd really appreciate it!

I don't know much about the LS1, but I can tell you that my LT1 gets abused by me and takes it very well. I have 80,000 miles on it with a lot of 1/4 mile runs and some autocrossing. I maintain it with regular oil and fluid changes and aside from the water pump leaking and taking out my opti a few years ago I didn't have any problems with it while it was stock. Oh yeah, I absolutely love the car. Hope that helps.

After working in the business, I realize, everything breaks. Some people say "imports are more reliable", "dont buy fords", "gms are no good". Its all nonsense. Everything breaks at one time or another; they are mechanical devices. If properly maintained, you can make anything last. Just keep in mind, gm parts and labor = inexpensive. Import pars and labor = insanely expensive. Its not uncommon to have a 1000 dollar brake job on an import, where the same job on a GM, Ford, Chry, would cost 200-300.

I love my 2001 Camaro LS1 that I have had for over a year. I had a third gen Camaro for 15 years(150K+miles) with no engine or trans work. The engine never used oil but I did use good oil and changed it like clock work. If you take care of them they will last.
