  • ls1 vs lt1

My brother recently bought a 99 z28 with a 6spd. I own a 94 firebird formula with the 6spd. I figured if we raced his car would walk all over mine. After driving it I wasn't so sure so we ran them to 110 where my cars speed limiter kicks on. I was very shocked when I pulled him in 1st and 2nd gear and it took him till around 80 to pull up even with me. At 110 he was about 3-4 car lengths infront of me which i thought he would be alot more. Is this normal between a stock lt1 to an ls1?

Stock to stock- definitely. For me, pre 4.10 gears, that was usually the case with 98-00' stock LS1 cars. 01's & 02's are a little different story. Typically, id hold strong until I was a couple seconds into 3rd, when Id usually get walked by. The LS1 really shines at higher speeds. LT1s have a lower peak torque, so tend to do very well light to light. 01's & 02's seem to run much better though.

Dont forget, with two 6 spd cars racing, there is a lot of driver technique at hand.

My sister's bone stock 1998 T/A A4 ran a SLEW of 14.8's (5800 ft) where as I now run consistant 14.4's with 4.10 gears at the same altitude.

Its tough to say on a street race. Go to the track, and get some times. General rule of thumb tho man, is that 3-4 car lenghts is good for a full second ET in the 1/4 mile.... which is close to average difference between the LS1 & LT1, stock to stock.

Best ET: 13.41 @ 103.80 MPH (@600 FT) with these Mods: SLP 2L/2R Exhaust, K&N FIPK, LT4 KM, 4.10 GM Superior gears, BMR LCAs & relocation brackets, Energy Suspension Poly Tranny Mount, 160 degree thermostat, HPP3 ( mostly for speedo & fan recalibration), MSD 6AL Ignition & MSD Blaster Coil and all the free mods.

I've owned both. ('97 Formula) then two LS1's. Your car is stronger in low end and his is stronger in high end. I personnlay like the feel of LT1 better....

With stock 3.23s it would take until mid 3rd gear before an LS1 would catch me. With 3.73s, it's not until the end of the quarter before they are on my bumper.
