    progress report:

we wet sanded the high build primer tonight. I used a squeegie to look for orange peel between sanding strokes. We sanded untill it came up baby smooth. Perfect!

Then, we applied 1 thick coat of primer sealer. It is currently drying. It is flashed, but still tacky.

Tomorrow: we lightly wet sand the sealer coat and apply color/clear.

When that is dry, we will wet sand it and buff it to a shine. I can't wait!
We should have it finished this weekend.
    so far:
2 coats of epoxy etching primer
3 coats of high build primer
    1 coat of primer sealer

What you are doing is exactly the right process. I have to do this exact same repair on the passenger side of project 93.

Bring project 93 up this way. We might as well git-r-done while my garage stinks like paint fumes. I've got enough leftovers of everything, all you'll need to buy is black base coat.

to bad i'm $500 worth of gas away. ... at least. If we lived in the same area this would be a no-brainer.

If we only lived close by......Can you imagine the result if we pooled out efforts? We could basically do total restorations.

Well, if you ever get tired of the warm winters head up this way. Because of the 94 project, my garage is not available for our regular cars. I just got in from shoveling and scraping all the car windows. Time for some hot coco.

I'm really excited about finishing up the paint work tonight.
I wet sanded the sealer this morning. It is all ready for base and clear. Assuming the color matches as well as the supply shop says it will, this is going to turn out perfect. I really doubt a body shop could of done a better job. My total cost in materials for the complete job is $230 and I have tons leftover. I might actually decide to do a couple other small touch ups on the car if time permits.

Base and clear are done. Our blend is perfect and impossible to see. It couldnt have possibly come out any better.

All it needs now is a wet sand and buff! No more rust!
What grit do I use to do my final wet sand? is 600 ok? Thats what I've been using on everything else up until now.

No.... use 1500 or 2000 grit to wet sand it smooth, then buff.

I hope this doesn’t start some kind of controversy like before, but I was just curious and wanted to ask a question: Are you planning on painting this area (red circle) where the bumper cover goes? I know that it is not seen once you put the cover back on, but I know that I would have to paint that to-I just have OCD like that

It doesnt need to be painted. it's just really dirty in that picture from wetsanding and 12 years of road grime. I'm going to wash it before I reassemble it. It'll look factory new, there isnt even any rust on it.

                            Looks pretty good Tracy.

The final grit you use will completely depend on how "slick" the rest of the clear on the car is. In other words, you want to match the area that you just cleared to the rest of the car. If the rest of the car has a slight factory orange peel and you wet sand this recently painted area with anything over 1000-1200, it will look much more slick than the rest of the car. Factory clear isn't even wet sanded at all, it is just buffed with a polish to properly harden and stretch the clear.

Start with 600 and work your way up. You can always make it more slick but you can't go backwards unless you re-clear it. Make sense? After you wet sand with a finer grit, buff a small area and compare it to the finish on the adjacent clear on the other area of the paint.

If you feel ambitious and the rest of the clear is in good shape, you could always wet sand the entire car with 2000 and buff the entire car. It would look better than factory.

We used a paint system by DuPont called "Nason". All the products used are from that same line.

I just finished wet sanding and buffing. Using 1500 grit I was able to leave just enough orange peel in it to match the door. The color match is just about perfect, no casual observer would ever think that panel was repainted, let alone by some guy at home.

I've polished it with 2 compounds so far and it is pretty shiny but it is also still pretty soft. I'm going to let it cure now for a few days before hitting it with the final polish.

In the meanwhile... I can reassemble the car and wash it. We are going to buff and polish the entire car.

How long did you allow the last coat of clear to setup before you started sanding?
