  • Exhaust for 98 LS1

I just recently bought a 98 trans am LS1 and I was wondering if this set up would work,

X-pipe, with no cats and Borla or flowmaster catback.

I really want it to be loud but, sound good at the same time, any suggestions??

What is your definition of loud?

I would think that setup would be very loud.

It's a subjective question. It would be way too loud for me. To me, loud is not better. I prefer the deep rumble.

As for the hurting your ears, I think 86 db at 3 feet is considered to cause perminant damage. I am positive that setup would be way over that.

I like the sound of a car with a big cam where they are really trying to keep the noise down. It's like a caged cat to get out.

ok, so if I got headers, y pipe, and a catback system, would highflow cats quiet it down a little bit?
Also how do I get that deep rumble sound?

if aran no cats with a catback system and headers and y-pipe would that be too loud?

OR what if I did the same setup with highflow cats would that qiuet it down a bit?

Loud is a rather subjective opinion. What is loud to one person, may not be loud to another. As a rule of thumb, headers, no cats, and a catback are going to be relatively loud. Cats are pretty effective mufflers. I would rather run dual cats and no muffler than the other way around. Then again, I'm gettin' old.

i run headers, no cats and a american thunder flowmaster. I love the sound. its pretty loud and it pisses some people off but others love it.

                      another question

ok, so if I so with no cats is is unbareably loud, like so loud that I will get pulled over?

also woud a highfow cat quiet it down a bit?

Gutting your cats or eliminating them on an LS1 equals horrid rasp. If you want NASCAR loud, get some LTs, an Offroad Y-pipe, and an SLP Loudmouth. You should be deaf in about a week.

I'm stock back to the Corsa exhaust...I LOVE the Corsa sound...but I'm thinking 'bout MAC mid-lengths with cats...

Cats muffle a lot of sound.

I have a very similar set-up to what you described on my car right now...

LT headers, y-pipe, no cats, and a Corsa muffler.

LOUD... like woah... NASCAR almost. Absolutely DEAFENING when you are at WOT.

Around town, it isn't too bad as long as you keep your foot out of it.

It is however, too loud for my liking, and I will be taming it down by putting a cat on it near the end of the intermediate pipe.

                              No "X-pipe" we have a Y-pipe.
