The only problem that I can see with using a wire wheel is that the steel wire is non-porous and the aluminum is porous. Therefore, the aluminum may corode faster than if you used stainless steel or brass. .02

Cleaning Brake Calipers

Well today I got a wire wheel for my drill and I went to work on the calipers - I did the left front and it looked great! And then the apartment manager came along and told me that there is to be no car washing.....something about it costs too much in water. DAMN. THat just pissed me off!!!!!!!Bruce

If you don't want to paint go to a automotive paint supply co. you might find some aluminum clean that you can just spray on. Let it set a few seconds. It has a mild acid that eats the oxide on the surface and just spray it off at a car wash.
