  • Leaking a ton of tranny fluid.

I was driving down the road when I noticed that my I had a big cloud of smoke behind me all of the sudden. I pulled over and there was fluid gushing out the bottom of the car and hitting the exhaust. After getting it towed home and looking further into it, it's coming from the back of the torque converter and the front of the transmission. I'm sure it's not coming from the tranny pan because I took off the torque converter cover and started it. When I put it in gear it starts pouring out. It's probably the pump bushing and seal right? So that would probably mean that I'll have to have somebody take the transmission out? How much do you suppose something like that is going to cost?

u can drop the tranny urself, drain whats left of the fluid, disconnect the d/s, any electrical connections, then the bellhousing bolts, pull back(using a jack of course and a buddy) and lower. estimated savings - 200-400$

Anybody else know how hard it is to do yourself? Should I put a higher stall converter in while I have it apart?

Sounds like the front seal. When you place the trans into a gear, it sends pressure through the input shaft into the converter to keep the converter clutch disengaged. It's an easy do it yourself fix, but you just have to drop the trans.

I had the same issue it was the front seal. The part is cheap. It is just a dirty job to do. Funny I had the cloud too. Trans fluid was dripping on my cat. Looked just like the spy hunter video game.

What part of this picture do I need to replace? http://www.zmydust.com/images/converter/P8240021.JPG
The seal around the base of the imput shaft or is there a seal under the 7 bolts that go in a circle? I'm to this point. I'm just on some parts to come in.

Just the seal around the input shaft. The 7 bolts retain the bearing.

Well, I just got my tranny all back together with a new front seal. I ended up putting a fuddle torque converter in with a stall of 3200 rpm. I took it out for a drive and the output shaft leaks a little so I replaced that seal too. With the new seal it still leaks out the output shaft. Then I drove it for about 30 more miles and now the front seal is leaking again. Not as bad as it was at first but still pretty good. I think it might be because I had trouble getting the torque converter in and had to pull it off and on so many times. Anyway I have a senior graduation party that I need my garage for so I'm gonna have to send the car to a shop so that they can worry about it. Thanks for all your help though.

Ok, I've been shopping around for a shop to have fix the front seal, but they all say that they won't just replace the front seal and they want to rebuild the transmission for lots of $$$. I think I'm going to try and replace it one more time by myself. Could stabbing the torque converter too many times have caused the new seal to go bad? Thanks for all your help.
