  • T56 Disassembly

I picked up a used T56. I want to lookover inside for any wear or bad shift fork pads. I do have the T56 service manual. In there it shows how to remove the rear section(tailshaft). Which i did. I do need 5/6 shift fork pads. I was wanting to check the front section if i need pads, or any worn out parts. The t56 manual shows to remove tailshaft housing, remove shift fork rods and gears then split cases. For a normal rebuild or a trans shop this works. I dont have the special pullers to remove the gears. Is it possible to remove the front case bolts and slide the front case off without messing anything up or is there something holding say the input shaft permanently into the front housing?

GM shift fork pads are plastic, Teflon? I do see bronze pads available. Is there any pro's or con's to the bronze pads?

    Thanks.

If im not mistaking, 5-6 is in the rear tailshaft, On the passenger side with it mounted in car. To use a cooler you would need to put a pump, cooler, and all hoses. I never heard of it being done, so i dont know if there is any benefits. I would just say use a good high performance fluid in place of the ATF.

If you need any pics i should be able to get them from the service guide. Let me know if you need any more info..

      So can anyone help me???

There will be snap rings holding the input shaft. You need specailty tools to take a trans apart.

all the way to the left in the picture, take off the tailshaft housing. push the pin out of the shifter rod (where the shifter goes in) and just slide the tailshaft off.
