  • Wierd Noise - Pulley?

I'm trying to diagnose a wierd noise in my V6. Its a continuous kind of metal-on-metal type of scraping sound that is hard to hear at idle, but noticeable at low engine speeed like 2000rpm. It does not change with gears, or when warmed up. The belt is in good condition and not loose, and I tried some belt dressing (didn't work), and I listened to it up close. It sounds like its on the passenger side of the engine, but definitely not the alternator pulley. I also don't think it is the a/c pulley.

What is the pulley right above the a/c? it looks like there's nothing there but a pulley. I am thinking maybe that one (does it have a bearing in it?), or the belt tensioner, OR the water pump. Has anyone else heard a noise like this? What does a water pump bearing sound like when its going bad? Or the belt tensioner? This mostly started when we had the extreme cold -20 weather. When the temp is below 15 or so, it will make a LOUD squeal when started but that one goes away. This new noise is not really loud but its constant and all I can think of is it reminds me of metal scraping metal going around, if that makes any sense.

It could be the bearing on the belt tension pulley but probably it's the front bearing on the ac compressor.

If you've recently driven through rain and got water where those bearing are, it makes them squeal and grind.

Go under the car and use WD40 with a tube and spray some lube behind the AC pulley near the shaft and do the same with the tension pulley - you'll probably fix it with that . . The WD40 will displace the water and quiet the bearings. - this happens all the time with mine.

No, there was no water. We haven't had any snow in a month and all liquid would have been frozen anyway. I wonder if extreme cold can have the same effect. Now today it was 45 for a change, first time in 6 weeks, and the noise seems to be reduced but still there slightly. This all started after a couple days at -20. Geez, I hate winter.

High humidity can do it too.

Everytime the humidity was up, my bearings would squeal. I pulled out my hair trying to find it and I even replaced my power steering pump which wasn't the problem.

Just hit those bearings with some WD and if that fails, we'll try something else....
