I'm trying to diagnose a wierd noise in my V6. Its a continuous kind of metal-on-metal type of scraping sound that is hard to hear at idle, but noticeable at low engine speeed like 2000rpm. It does not change with gears, or when warmed up. The belt is in good condition and not loose, and I tried some belt dressing (didn't work), and I listened to it up close. It sounds like its on the passenger side of the engine, but definitely not the alternator pulley. I also don't think it is the a/c pulley.
What is the pulley right above the a/c? it looks like there's nothing there but a pulley. I am thinking maybe that one (does it have a bearing in it?), or the belt tensioner, OR the water pump. Has anyone else heard a noise like this? What does a water pump bearing sound like when its going bad? Or the belt tensioner? This mostly started when we had the extreme cold -20 weather. When the temp is below 15 or so, it will make a LOUD squeal when started but that one goes away. This new noise is not really loud but its constant and all I can think of is it reminds me of metal scraping metal going around, if that makes any sense.
