  • Starter Problems( My old screenname was dcacjc)

I have a 1994 Formula and the starter went out and we replaced it. But now sometime my car starts fine but other times it takes about 4 or 5 turns. When it doesn't start right away it sounds as if the starter is hitting the fly wheel..Any suggestions?

Double check that the bolts are all tight and that it was the correct starter. When it does NOT start, does the engine at least turn over or you get like a grinding noise?

its neither. Its just a clicking noise. If you get under the car w/ a flash light when it does it, you can see the arm come out of the starter and hit the fly wheel i believe but then sometimes it doesnt hit and the car starts right up

I take it its the starter. Return it and ask for a new one. The solinoid on the starter might be bad.

We installed a brand new GM starter and it still does the same thing.

I thought I saw something in my Haynes manual about shims for the starter. Anyone know anything about this?

some starters require shims, if u take the old one out and theres a flat peice of metal with it, put that metal back its the shim and will shim it perfectly.

as for the intermitant no start - check all the connects, clean them 2. the batter and start connections. if the problem presists have the starter tested

I was speculating that he might have left the shim off and perhaps the starter gear was hitting the flywheel sometimes instead of engaging properly. Any possibility?

clean the connections at the starter and battery and if tat dont work, get it tested, its not all that uncommon for a new starter to be bad

u check the battery connection? i mean like disconnect it, pullt he bolt out, pull off the cover and clean it? it may look ok on the outside, but the inside could be all corroded

Could it be a bad ignition switch?

How about oil leaking on the starter? Could that be it?
