I agree; not telling them is a bad idea. Personally I would save up, build a nasty v8 drop it in and tell them you put a "8" in it. They may have to know it's a v8, but they don't have to know how much power your making (or at least they never asked me). Other than that, turbo or NO2 is probably your best chance to get the power up and keep insurance down. I'm not sure how much boost or how much of a shot the 6 can take though. A nitrous system is pretty cheap compaired to the other options, but you have to pay for refills. In the end though I think honesty will pay off with the fact that you can drive your car and not be paranoid about getting into a accident.
SOLD: 91 Firebird, 350 .030 over, flat top pistons, done up 305 (14022801) heads, performer rpm airgap intake, 292/292 .501/.501 cam, holley 4150 (800cfm) carb, Th400 trans, Gm 10 bolt posi rear end. Currently running 14.6 at 93 mph. Now driving a 04 Mitsu Lancer, slower but at 1.87 per gallon for gas; much cheaper to run

      insurance

      I agree with Tracy,

I also work at the Oklahoma Insurance Commission as a senior claims analyst. I do know that if you lie on the application of a policy a company can and most times will deny coverage back to inception. You can play dumb and tell them that you are not a motor guy and that the other owner must have swapped it but then again you are lying and could get caught.

the best thing for you to do is raise the deductible up very high like 1000.00 or 2000.00 take a defensive driving course to get a discount on your insurance and ask your agent what other discounts are available.

also, I understand that you are adding extras to your car, do you know that most insurance policies will not cover after market items unless you have a seperate rider on your policy? If your after market rims are stolen they will pay the value of used factory rims not your high dollar rims. stereos, speakers aftermarket taillights and more... would not be covered except to bring it back to original factory specs. OF course every state is different and your policy really addresses this as the state just wants you to have insurance, we as a whole do not care either way as to whether aftermarket parts or original parts are used. that is the company's decision make that provision and either you agree by buying the product or you disagree by going elsewhere to find a company willing to insure it the way you want.

It sounds like you are doing well with what you have so far and you appear to have a bearing as to what is going on with insurance rates that you chose the best option for you, so I have no doubt that you will again do what is not only correct legally but best for you in this matter.

not trying to preach to you so I hope you do not take it that way, just like to give info out to people who may not know about it so you do not have to learn everything the hard way like I did when I was your age. (31 in 10 days but still act like a 18 year old whenever I get the chance)

As for the V6, put in a GEO I3 motor, properly inform your insurance company, and maybe they will lower your rates.

Seriously though, this is the age old question for V6 owners. Most who dared have found it more expensive than it was worth to get a V6 to V8 performance levels. If you like the challenge do it. If you want a fast car soon, start with a 5.7.

        Now the important stuff!

Probably won't make friends with people here who get there paycheck from insurance companies, but wake up.

There is not much in American society that I despise more than insurance companies. You should treat them exactly the way they treat us. I do, and have played by there rules for years (got a family to think of), but that has never kept them from pulling every stunt known to lawyers to avoid THEIR legal obligations.

Think about how much of your income they take in one way or another. They are raising their rates (at record levels) on us and our employers, when our economy is at an all time low. Yet take a few minutes to research how their companies are doing in our "downturn". You'll be suprised, or maybe you won't.

You will pay more, and get the same old in return. Delay..... Deny..... Appeal.... Delay...... Pay minumum amount, most goes to lawyers.

Anobody wanna talk about polical leverage? What kind of power the insurance companies pull in Washington, with their lawyers and limitless finances.

In the future (the way this current trend goes), kiss everything with "risk" associated with it in our "free" country goodbye, baby. Fast cars, dangerous sports, even maybe junk food, will all become too expensive for the insurance system (which is the biggest fraud by the way) to support. When ski passes cost $100 a day and a 70 in 65 speeding ticket makes your insurance cost double, remember who was RAH, RAH for insurance. The politicians, insurance executives, and lawyers who support their corrupt system.

HINT: Don't get me wrong. What I believe in is personal responsibility. You are PERSONALLY responsible for the risks you take in your life, and MOST importantly the risks you could pose to OTHERS! Drive your performance cars responsibly, save the action for the tracks (the Ins. companies will also get them soon BTW). Drive / Ski / Ride / play sports within your limits. When something happens it is YOUR fault. Your risk taken = Your fault. Not the cars, not the road, not the equipment, not even the insurance company. YOU!

Life is dangerous. When there is a lottery jackpot at the end of every accident, the rules of individual responsibilty get warped.

No personal offense to anyone, we all have to have a job to support our families. ESP you Norm, you are the coolest, nicest chap ever (with flawless taste in cars).

America is about freedom, and I think the threat to our freedom to choose the things we enjoy in our lives is being seriously jeapordized. Not afraid to say so, obviously.

Care to debate my position, be sure to bring some facts. I'll have mine.

Bend over backwards to get the insurance companies to charge me more, never. Answer every question they ask truthfully, always. But remember how many versions of the "truth" their lawyers have to play with, before you decide how to say yours.

        Peace,

        Sean

It is. And you can spend money on it until you are blue in the face. if you really cannot afford the 8 and the higher insurance maybe you should put a supercharger on that 6? When it comes time to sell the car you could remove the charger and sell it on Ebay, recovering at least some of the cost.

SLP sells a higher lift rocker arm ratio set that gives another 10-15 hp. It's just like swapping cams but without the hassle. That combined with a high flow intake and exhaust should give you 20 HP.

There are plenty of things that you can do to pick up a few hp on your 6:

You could do the "free ram air" mod or the SLP "ram air"...

with a K&N filter will get you a few hp. I thought someone made a lid for the V6, but I couldn't find one.

You could put some headers on there...

And some programming wouldn't hurt either, I think hypertech makes a programmer for the 3.8L--not sure if Diablo does yet.

And those rocker arms are a good idea too

FWIW, I used to have a V6 and wasted tons of $$$ to try to make it fast...ditching it and buying a V8 was the best thing I could have done.
