  • 95 camaro trans problem

My brother has a 95 camaro and it is running poorly. he has had the codes checked by autozone twice getting a code referring to a truck transfer case?? and Hibdon completed an analyzer test or diagnostic test and found no problems. yet the car backfires, wehn you rev the motor to four grand the tach and motor rev up and down from 4000 to 3000. Also, he has to creep to get the car moving and if he gives it too much gas the rpms go up and he does not go anyfaster.

Is this a speed sensor problem or other sensor problem? I recently took out a loan for him to get the trans rebuilt but we donot want to do it if it is not necessary.

let me know what your opinions are and if you need the actual code number I'll have the car checked again this weekend.

the car has the v6 motor (3800 I think) auto trans ttops and after market dual exhaust. He is at his wits end and I am trying to help him get it back on the road again before he tears anything up by driving it in this condition.

    thanks,

    Jason

It is easy and cheap to change the Trans filter first. If it doesn't help, well, you wasted $20. If its the trans, big bucks.

        update

I test drove the camaro today and I do not think it is the trans. It went right into every gear without hesitation, and shifted when it supposed to.

some of the problems it is experiencing is backfiring slightly every now and then, when you are driving it and floor it you can hear it miss or mini backfire a little and sometimes it revs to 5000 rpm but is not moving other times it works just fine. I had auto zone run a check on it and they did not find any codes in it. my brother said the code he was told was a p170 code. (he did not seem sure of himself on the number and since it is not showing up now I cannot confirm it.

are there any sensors that come to mind that may cause this malpractice or is just in need of a tune up (117,000) miles

thanks again for any help you can give me on this. I do appreciate it.

        Jason

Not that I understand it. But since he isn't sure and it is not giving any codes now, I would suggest the basic stuff with a complete tuneup. Plugs, wire, cap and rotor if it has it. With 117k miles on it, it is due for wires.

            codes

thanks for the code page this does help me understand that the trans is probably fine and the computer is just reacting to a bad code that has been removed. I think we will go ahead and get it tuned up and while we are there we will replace the waterpump since you have to remove it to get to the distributor cap (right??).

I'll let you know how it turns out.

A tune up is a good idea, but before you go replacing everything under the sun, run some tests on it. Take a look at your bank 1 O2's and see whats happening. See if you have a lazy sensor or an erroneus reading or broken wire. Check the fuel pressure and volume and all of the vacuum hoses.

checking the bank 1 o2 sensor

                n20lt4bird,

how do I check these items? do I need special equipment for that?

If so then i'll take it to the repair shop for a better diagnosis then I can do.

now that it is getting dark out before I get home from work it is really hard to work on the car but I'll get started on your suggestions (visual inspections first )

                thanks, Jason
