  • LT1 to LT4 swap questions

Ok i just picked up a new camaro. Its a 94 LT1 Z28 with auto tranny. Tranny was just rebuilt 2k miles ago so i want to use it. Motor has 141k on it with some funky bottom end noise goin on, dont even feel like dealing with it. I have really been thinking of buying a used LT4 motor either off ebay or an online junkyard. LT4's came out of what cars? Corvettes only? They seem hard to find. Id prefer not to do the LS1 swap because of all the headaches, i just wanna drop something in with few headaches... Anything id have to change/modify to do this? This will bolt right up to the auto tranny right?

I dont know how easy its going to be to find a Used LT4 engine. I have a feeling its going to be a tough one. Rebuild the LT1 and do a cam and heads which should make you better power than a stock LT4.

Take your LT1 engine, rebuild it with a set of well ported LT1 heads and matching cam, add all the requisite goodies like intake and exhaust upgrades, larger injectors, larger throttle body, PCM tune, etc and you will make about 125-150HP more than the stock LT4 engine makes. Or simply find an LT1 engine with significantly lower miles than yours and do the heads/cam swap. Check out these heads and cam packages as an example.

There were also about 100 97 Camaro SS and about 30 97 Firehawks built with the LT4 engine, but it isn't likely you'll find one of those engines for sale.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't the LT4 block from the Vette have 4 bolt main caps where the F-bodies received 2 bolt mains?

I would imagine all LT4s were 4 bolt mains. What you says is considered true for the LT1 engine.

All F-bodies received 2 bolt engines in the factory. In the rare instance a car was short blocked or long blocked under warranty, the replacement motor had 4 bolt mains. I've been told all warranty replacements were 4 bolt.

I have a 4-bolt motor out of a 95 Camaro in my garage. The serial plate on it is blank. It used to have a sticker on it where the serial number is normally stamped. The original owner of the car told me that the dealer had to replace the motor under warranty, so then it all made sense.
