Picked up a nice project z28 im currently in the process of revitalizing.. 94' z28 141k brand new auto tranny....

I pulled the motor out the top a few weeks ago, left the tranny in the car. I tore down the motor found it spun a bearing - so i tossed the crank, but kept all the rods and pistons. I sent the block to the machine shop, they hot tanked it , put new cam bearings, freeze plugs and gave it a nice hone. They said one cylinder was slightly scored but should be fine... Now i got this block on the stand ready to go... i have new stock crank for it, im thinking im just going to re-ring the old pistons and just let them sit in the parts washer for about a week. the cam is completely bad, every other lobe is pitted. the lifters have wear too. Whats a good cam/lifter kit with slightly more performance than the stock setup, keeping budget in mind? I was thinking an lt4 hotcam... but im not sure about matching lifters for it. Also with those cams do you have to press the dowel pin in for older optis?

Regarding the cam, I think that it will all depend on the heads you choose. It definitely helps to match the heads with the cam. If going with stock or slightly ported, then I think the hot cam or CC305 is fine. The Comp Cams 850 OEM replacement lifters are perfect for this setup. I'm using them for my AI cam and would recommend against something like the Comp-Rs.

thanks for the cam/ lifter advice, would sending my stock heads out having them port matched, milled and having them install new valves and springs be a more expensive alternative than just buying a new set of rebuilt heads? like 6- 700 is my max for heads whether they be a rebuilt set off ebay or sending my current ones out which have 141k on em...

Maybe it's just me, but I would recommend against buying a set of already ported heads. You never know what you're going to get. They may advertise the flow #s, but the runner shape and design may not be good. Aftermarket unported heads cost a lot of $$, and some aren't that good. If you're going to spend about $700, then a good low budget head is to get the LE1 "budget head" from Lloyd Elliott. It costs $750, and is obviosuly much better than stock. http://www.eportworks.com/lt1.html
He can probably also recommend you a cam based on your needs. I prefer Advanced Induction, but they cost a lot more money, and also hear nothing but good about Lloyd.
Of course, if you have a reputable head shop, you can have them do it, but Lloyd and AI have great knowledge on these heads.

What are your goals for this project?

well, i started out i was going to throw a boneyard motor in there for a bout a grand, but i figured, you never know what your getting with one of those, so i figured id tear this one down, satisfy my curiosity of the lower end noise i was hearing and do a mild budget buildup hopefully beating the price of a jasper reman long block (2500) and reuse as many parts as possible in the process...

            Heres a few pics,

cant really see what sensor that would be. it might be a abs wheel speed sensor or something that runs somewhere along there.

I agree. It's hard to see but it looks like the harness for the right ABS speed sensor.
