  • Pro 5.0 shifter Installation questions

    Hey guys,

I'm going to be installing a Pro 5.0 shifter into my Trans Am tomorrow, and I just had a few quick questions. First, any suggestions on how to keep shifter noise down? I've read that some people make gaskets for where the shifter meets the transmission (which i'm planning on doing), but are there any other steps I can take to prevent extra noise? My stock one has been rattling a bit lately and it drives me absolutely insane! Any special tips on adjusting the stop points for the shifter?

Thank you very much for any help!

Also, I have been noticing a decent amount of noise that is actually coming from inside the tranny (especially when you really get on it). Is this normal? I have a slight 3rd gear syncro problem, but other than that the transmission has been absolutely fine.

No gaskets, just a thick bead of copper rtv.

And don't forget to use some loctite and torque the allen head bolts down.

Its sort of a choice... a little gear noise through a performance shifter, or a quiet sloppy stock shifter.

On the Pro 5.0, be sure to really torque down tight on the bolts that hold the shift lever to the shifter. They always seem to come loose. I ended up getting longer bolts and double nutting them.

Do you happen to know off hand what size bolts and nuts they are? Mine came loose and it's incredibly sloppy right now. My shift knob smacks into my console when I shift into second because it's so loose.

You don't need to double nut it. Just loctite it and bolt it down tight.

            Hey guys,

So me and my friend put in the shifter today, and its definitly awesome! Such a difference from stock. I think my only complaint is that the threads for the shifter knob are way too long, and with the stock shifter knob screwed all the way down, a good portion of the threads are still exposed (the boot does not cover them either). I guess its not the worst thing in the world, but I don't think it looks that great. I'm assuming they did this to accommodate different shift knobs. I think I might paint the handle black to make it blend in more. Has anyone else noticed this?

I cut about 1" off the threads.... significant improvement.
