Ok i want to replace my pulleys since my engine is now make a squeeking noise, at first i thought it was the belt so i changed the belt but it still does it. so now the next step is replacing the pulleys. does any one know were i can get a set for a 99 LS1. or have any recommendations on what i could do to fix the ones that are one there. Because it looks like its going to be a pain to replace them do to clearance, so i know that a shop will charge an arm and a leg but i would rather try it my self anyway. thanks for any help

it could still be the belt...had that happen to me. went to the goodyear gatorbelt..no probs since..and its garranteed for life.

also could be the alternator bearing..how many miles on ur 99?. i dont think you need to change your pully's..ive not heard of anyone having to do that for a squeek.

Well actually..... I had to. belts didn't cure it, cleaning the pulleys didn't cure it. It would squawk on a 1-2 and 3-4 gear shift. Evidently the accessories were too tough to slow down for the factory setup. This drove me nuts. It did this from day one. It was in the dealer shop several times and they couldn't solve it either. Someone tipped me off that they cured theirs with an underdrive pulley set so I figured I would give it a try. Worked like a charm. The other advantage is that 127K miles and still have all the stock accessories. The shaft driven water pump died though.... go figure. Can't say it did anything for HP, although it did seem to rev out of gear a little quicker.

About 5 years ago I had to replace my entire AC assembly, because the pulley was squeaking. I took it to a dealership to have it replaced, they of course replaced the tensioner pulley instead...had a rather large fiasco about that (that was the last time my car ever went to a dealership), I refused to pay and couldn't find another place to take it to that week...the very next week the pulley seized up and I had to have it towed to a garage to have it fixed.

If you know one of your pulleys is the culprit...FIX IT NOW...don't let the same thing happen to you.

Fire it up without a belt on it just ot be sure it is in that system. I have heard belts squeel when shifting at high RPM, like mentioned higher in this thread, but that would never squeek at idle. I have also heard tensioner pulley bearings squeek, and bearings in alternators or A/C compressors too. Try using a stethescope to pinpoint the squeek. I would be pretty sure the squeek is a bearing, not a pulley. A solid metal object cant really squeek.

Trying the gatorback belt first is a good idea, that just might shut it up, if it is the belt making noise and not a bearing.

            thanks

thanks for all the help? one of my friends and I figured it out by taking off the main belt and then taking off the ac belt. the noise stopped after we took off the ac belt so im going to get a new one now because the other one looks like crap and has stuff in all the groves. Once again I thank you for all the help.
            Thanks
