  • Brass pilot bearing siezed in crankshaft

    Hey guys,
Here again with another issue with worldly physics.
I have my trans etc down for a clutch swap, the pilot bearing from before was of the brass bushing variety and wasn't properly lubed by the tech who did ithe last install; the entire inner section has completely work away, and due to heat, has 'welded' the outer section to the crankshaft. I have tried many different means to remove it, including filling the void behind and in the bearing with heavy grease and hammering a socket extension into the bearing to put a large amount of hydraulic pressure behind the bearing to lift it out. It looked like there *might* have been some of the pb blaster I applied squeezing out between the bearing and crankshaft section. I feel like I may be out of options here and need to step it up to a skill saw with a metal blade to take a longitudinal slice out of the bushing.

    Any ideas?

there are pullers that go small enough with the "teeth or jaw" facing outwards, i had to use that to get mine out in my old 88

My friend brought one by to try it, it kept slipping. I just logged back on to say that I resolved the problem with a very carefully driven chisel to split the bearing sheath. It took about an hour, but it's done. Time to put everything back together now THe new bearing is going in with a good coating of silicone spray to ease the next installation.

Geez... now that the trans is up and the car is running again I've come to notice my problem has remained the same... It would seem that my trans is generating a nasty whine under load in every gear but 4th. I think it's from the pilot bearing being basically gone for about 300 miles. on acceleration load, it a whine, on deceleration its a grind. The new clutch is very nice tho

My trans has made noises for the last 80k.

When the car is idling and clutch not pushed in
Similar symptoms to what you described, etc.

I have looked into it in the past and just came to the conclusion that these are just noisy Tranny's.

Boy I really hope so. I feel almost embarrassed driving the thing... Maybe switching back to a stock or ls1 tranny mount will help the noise situation?
It does still run smooth and I havent seen any crap in the fluid either, also checked it with a neodymium magnet left in the drainpan for a few hours came out clean.
Either way, looks like its about time to starting saving for a good rebuild.

does the noise go away when you push the clutch in?

Yes only when the drive-line does not have a positive or negative load. The noise goes away 100% when in 4th, which is the only thing this leads me in a specific direction with this problem. I'm thinking(hoping) its just the bearing that buffers the speed difference between the input and output shafts, that would explain why 4th does not have an audible problem.

If it helps, the sound it makes is suspiciously similar to a didgeridoo you know the Australian one.

I'm garaging the thing from this point on until I figure it out, this noise has got to mean big trouble, I'll post a picture of whats left of the old pilot bearing so you can get an idea of how much input shaft play there really was.

.This is the image of the old brass pilot bushing next to the alignment arbor and TOB. There is a 4 mm section missing that had to be chiseled away in order to crush it away from the crank insert, so its actually a little more worn than it may appear in the image.
