  • Transmission issue?

I have a 98 WS6 w/automatic that engages hard (lunges, slams, bangs, jumps, jerks, hits, pounds, surges or any other descriptive word) only when placing it in drive. Anyone know of a possible cause and solution?

Time for a rebuild. Even though putting it in low and shifting manual works, it's time for a refresh. Low sprag is probably done.

Joe is probably right, food for thought; what about driveline slack? Anything on a reverse shift or is it only into drive?

Then there is a possibility of driveline slack from U joints and rear end. What RPM does the engine idle at when in neutral?

I have issues with my transmission and was wondering if above diagnostics / recommendations apply to mine?

Everything works ok except shifting from 1st to 2nd. It shifts real hard, i.e. jerks the whole car even when driving of easy on the gas.

It has about 60k miles on it and I wonder if I need to replace the fluid? Is there a service recommendation?

              Thanks.

It may sound stupid, but start with easy solutions... when was the last time YOU replaced the tranny filter? A clogged filter or debris going thru the valve body can mess with the check valves... all causing the tranny to bang in gears, hard shifts, etc So if you didn't personally watch someone else change your filter... well you never know. I belive since the 4l60e is a beefed up version of the 700r4, 1st and R are in the same clutch pack. I had a 700r4 work fine in 1-2 P and R, but when the clutch packs were taken out of the drums, it was 1st and 2nd that were f*cked up.
