      Well look around you, small displacement has big potential without forced induction. The M3 being one of these beasts (3.2 liter with 333HP without a supercharger or turbo Tell me this car wouldn't scare a stock 5.7L). It's not just late models, look back at the first generation z/28 (302 might I add) that was rated for 290 hp but was definatly closer to the 350-400hp range.I would hate to catch one of these beasts at a stop light even though it's motor is 48 cubic inches smaller. A properly built small displacement motors can rack up huge horse power. Oh yeah, by the way, there is no generation gap as I turn 18 this next saturday. That's it, I'm done.

        I am going to have to side with Jay on this one. Both cars are stock, from the factory, you CAN compare them. They may be a different animal, but both cars are fast, which one is faster?? As far a the potential for mods goes, a turbo charged car usually has room for mods. I dont know much about the subarus, but I do have a turbo charged Omni. The car ran 12 PSI stock. I've got it bumped to 15, with plans to go to 18. You can safely run around 22 PSI. This car hauls and when I stomp on a V8 with it......there is a replacement for displacement.....its called a turbo, and it works. Its just another method of making power and to deny that is ignorance or stubborness or something.

        .....I still like my 500 HP LT1 better though......

          The small displacement NA engines which have no torque can only make horsepower by revving the piss out of them.
          HP=(TxRPM)/5252
          So in a stoplight battle, a torky car has the advantage if he can get traction. An awd car can also be a big advantage, but the hp figures that the small cars have are given at a really high RPM, so unless the guy drops the clutch at 6g, its hard for him to get the kind of 0-60 and 1/4mi performance that the guys in the magazine write about. If the guy's willing to launch his car like that, and the tires bite, then he will shoot out in front like a rocket. Now, in defense of the import guys, they can change the STI's turbo and the exhaust and reprogram the car into the 11s without too much trouble. I was at a import dealer grand opening this summer where a racing team was there with some of their cars, and spent some time talking to the drivers & mechanics and looking at their project cars. You can throw some money at them & yes, they will be even faster. This pic below is from one of the Suburus before the STI, but I was impressed with his immaculate workmanship. The picture really doesn't do the engine justice. He didn't have timeslips...

            I have one

            I have an 04 STI.. I gotta say, I love it! I agree with some of you about some of the lines on it. I honestly got it for the performance. I wanted to keep my f-body, but I needed some more doable in the winter. SO, I figured, why not get AWD and TURBO and something thats just as quick as my f-bod was! Anyways, I ended up with this STI. I currently have about 5,000 miles on it. They're pricey, but I really like it. I also definately agree with some 30 year old white guy NOT driving it. Definately a kid car.. I am 21, and most of the people that "dig" it are the people in my age bracket.... However, it's nice to mess with the C5 owners that look at it and laugh... They have a little shocked look on their face when I take them. (Few little mods ) Honestly though, just my .02, it's a great car. Very reliable, quick, and handles like it's on rails... Definately a sweet ride!
            One SWEET 02 GAGT w/ tons of mods!

              And large displacement has big potential without forced induction... Dodge Viper. In the end, what it comes down to are all different ways of making power and reachign the same goal. Turbo to N/A, DOHC to pushrod, large displacement to small displacement, ANYTHING can be made fast. Utilizing any of the methods does not make any one way less "fair" than any other. It's stock versus stock -- the only constant that we can fairly compare.

                          That was just my opinion. It might suprize you but people may have different opinions. Stubborn in your eyes I may be but I perfer to call my self strongly opinionated. Ignorant, however, I am not. Take it as the opinion I wrote it as. On this topic, I'll agree to disagree.

                            You have my apologies, I wasnt trying to attack you personally. I didnt mean to call you ignorant; you may be the most well informed person in the world for all I know. What i meant to say is that I think you are wrong in your philosophy of "no replacement for displacement". Again, my apologies.
