Ken, your windows media player may need to be updated. If you have an older version you will get what you got.

If that doesnt bother you, theres something wrong. The thing is, the only reason that guy was doing what he did, was because of the fact that most people WILL just stand around. If the tall guy in the white walked up with that "look" in his eye, like he meant business, things would have been different. I could tell just by watching the video that the guy was intimidated by the skater punk. Why? Probably worried about the consequences of getting into a fight...... unfortunately its not the bad guy who gets punished these days, but the guy who stands up for what is right. If he clocked the skater, HE probably would have been going to jail.

The girl had the right attitude, but not the brawn to go with it.

Personally.....I wouldnt have waited until he actually swung the skateboard.....

One day, he'll damage the wrong guys property or swing at the wrong guy and that will be it... lights out for him.

How many times have you passed by a motorist stopped on the highway thinking, "ah, someone else will stop,"?

Chances are, everyone else thinks that too, and no one does.

This has been concretely documented in psychological journals over and over. The bystander effect is completely real.

It certainly doesn't make me feel very good inside to know that I would probably just stand by, but I do believe in it. Maybe knowing about it can actually give me some motivation to step up if I am ever faced with that kind of situation.
There are a lot of factors in that. Are the bystanders alone, or in a group? Are they sure it is really an emergency, or maybe not? Also, most people aren't sure what to do anyway. -- If one person helped, more people would be more inclined to help also.

              In a group.

Such as a crowd like was standing around that guy. Or, a bunch of cars traveling down a freeway. People hardly ever stop to help a distressed motorist (unless she's blonde) even though we all think, "ahh, someone else will stop."

The most vivid example of the bystander effect was the Kitty Genovessee (again, sp?) murder. Kitty was murdered publicly, in her own apartment complex, while several witnesses all watched from their apartment balconies... all assuming that someone else was surely calling the police.

              I remember watching an experiment.

4 students were escorted down a hallway. They passed an electrician who was on a ladder fixing the hallway lights. Each student was sent to take a test in their own individual room. (They thought the test was the key part of the experiment they were participating in). During the test, the "electrician" fell form his ladder, making a large crashing sound. The camera watched the students' reactions. They all heard it, and you could tell they were distrubed. But they all kept on with their tests for several minutes.

When the same experiment was conducted with a single student being lead into a room, the student almost immmediately responded to the fallen electrician.

It is an interesting phenomenon. Knowing about it can really help you avoid falling victim to it.

I couldn't get it to load either. But, I have that Steve-O DVD. I know he does some stupid stuff, but most of it is funny. However, I did not find that one funny. The guy attacked him with a skateboard after he had already damaged the kids vehicle. I guess it's not funny because that could have been any one of us. I know I'd be ready to fight anyone that threw a skateboard at any of my cars. And noone would have tried to help me. That was certainly very F'ed up.

                  Do you know how?

                  (the condensed version)

Even if you cried help or something of the nature people would still have hesitations: Should I help, or should I let someone more qualified? Is this my responsibilty? Has someone else already gotten help?

You have to eliminate as many uncertainties a person would have. You have to single them out (pointing at them) and give specific instructions. "You, in the leather jacket, call for an ablulance." They know it is them you are talking about and you tell them exactly what to do. Also, research finds that it works the other way. Once one person is taking action, bystanders are more inclined to offer assistance also.
