While I'm installing the cam and heads should I remove the air pump and EGR systems? I hear differing stories as to what will happen. like clogged cat and oil leaks to nothing will happen to it will run better. I figure that I only put about 1500 miles on the car cruising and problaly 30-40 1/4 mile passes a year so If I don't need them and they take up room in the engine bay why not take that junk out? If I remove them will I need to program them out or will they not affect the PCM?
    Thanks

Can't answer the question regarding codes and programming unless you tell us what year your car is. Suggestion - Include a short "signature" with vital info like year, model, trans, any major mods, etc.

removing them will cause the ses light to come on and you will fail inspection (even if it is just a visual inspection and not a tail pipe emissions test). There should be no problem running the emissions control with the proper cam and heads selection.

That's why we need to know the "year"... not all LT1's are the same. On the 93-95 models, you can unplug the AIR pump and remove the entire system with no code/SES, as long as you have a good fuse in the circuit. 96 and newer OBD-II cars have a flow detection device, to it is difficult to remove without getting a code.

Same with EGR.... the OBD-I models will GENERALLY not set a code/SES, because the diagnostice test is not very sensitive. OBD-II it is almost guaranteed you will get the code.

Depending on the year of your car, it may or may not throw a code. The earlier 4th gens are NOT very sensitive on the AIR, but probably will detect the deleted EGR.

It can be programmed out very easily.

I have the Air and EGR deleted from my 93 Formula, and I aced the emissions test in OH. But I also have a cat on there.
I am not sure what kind of inspection laws Michigan has, but if you have a cat, and let the car warm up, you should have no problem with the test.

              Updated info

Fred, It's a 95 Z with an A4, I'm installing a CC cam(233/242 .534-.540 lift on 114*lsa. Edelbrock shorty headers are going on too. I use LT1_edit on it.) I updated my sig too.
I bought a NOS 5176 instruction manual from you about two years ago

I'm see so many people have emissons test in other places. We do not have any kind of tests here. They just ask you to honk the horn and turn on the lights and blinkers and thats it.

We dont have an "emissions inspection" in upstate NY either, but as a NY state inspector, I know that a car that has the air pump and egr system removed will fail. Unless its different in Michigan, the car would fail visually for missing the components.

None in Wisconsin either, but I still would not remove that stuff if you intend to keep the car street driven. If you want to go race only, fine. What if you want to sell the car? It's value is damaged. It cannot be registered in many states because it will fail the visual. A dealership will not take it on trade if it is butchered up.

It is your car now, but it most likely will not always be yours. What about the next owner? In the end, it is yours to do whatever you want to, screw the next guy, right? (or screw yourself if you cannot sell it in a few years)

I keep ALL the original parts from the car and IF I sell it I will offer to return the car to original condition. I will also inform the "next guy" about what was done to the car as far as me "butchering up" the car. I'm not out to "screw" anyone.

                            Poor choice of words.

Plus the car is almost ten years old now (95) and not worth much as far as re-sale value anyway. I'm 50 years old too and planning on retiring at 62 to enjoy racing it.

Sorry about the word choice. I didnt intent to flame you. You have a point in the age of the car, it's small value and your intentions to keep it for racing. I've been through it with an 86 I had. I dropped a non-emissions carb'd 350 in it, and had a heck of a time selling it. (it was only 4 years old at the time) Nobody wanted it on trade and most people looking at it were not into that type of thing.

I didn't intend to sound overly critical!
