  • Minor 3rd Gear Problem

    Hi guys...

I am tryin to determine whether I SHOULD take my car into the dealer or not. Ive had major major problems in the past with dealers tryin to fix my cars, and thus I am almost ready to just live with this problem, so please give advice.

I have a White 2002 Trans AM Ram Air, 6 sp hurst. 22,000 Miles

When Im driving, and i go to shift into 3rd gear, sometimes the transmission does not grab when I release the clutch, and kicks the stick back out, but this only happens sometimes, and usually happens if im not on smooth road. Im jsut wondering if this problem could worsen and whether or not its worth taking into a dealer who IF he even sees the problem, will dismantle the trans and mess it up worse!!!!! I kinda feel like i can live with the problem, but I just dont want to let it go now and really give me a problem later.

Once its in 3rd gear, it does not fall out, regardless of bumpy roads or not, its just when i am in the process of shifting, sometimes it misses. Also, if I just leave the clutch in, and push the gear up to 3rd, if I am going over bumpy road, any kind of bumpy road, the shifter will fall out back to nuetral, and i dont think thats normal.

Let me know any advice please. I am not a mechanic, so breaking it down in lamens terms is best. THANKS!

The problem is, ive had extremely bad luck with those dealer mechanics dude. EXTREMELY BAD LUCK. And my worst fear is for them to take it apart, and put it back together, and have it even more messed up than it is.

So thats the real problem. Is it a simple fix, does anyone know? Or is it somethin that is very minor and probably wont worsen???

It just seems that once a dealer takes something apart, its just never the same after that.

Oh also, if anyone is lookin for a 98-02 ram air hood , i have an extra one im trying to sell.

Due to BAD LUCK with the dealers, I sued GM and they bought back my 2000 formula. I had bought an authentic ram air hood for the thing, and it made a world of difference.

The color is red, but can be repainted. Its in very very good condition. Only has 1 year of use on it, the rest of the time its been garage kept with blankets over it. Askin 500 bucks. I live in Michigan.

          Is the hood OEM?

Anywho, you don't have to go the the dealer to get it checked out....and besides, you're still covered under warranty. Get it checked out...won't hurt ya.

            I appreciate your advice.

As far as the dealer is concerned, just because the car is still under warranty doesnt mean SH*T. That doesnt mean the dealer wont F up my car worse if they touch it, and I dont care to have my car in there for the next 3 months letting them try to fix it. I dont want my car to get more messed up than it already is thats all. And from my experience, those hacks have no clue what they are doing.

Im sorry, what does OEM mean? I dont know much about cars and the terminology.

And lastly, you say I do not need to have a Dealer check it out? I thought I could only have them do repairs (without paying for it) as long as its under the warranty, and nobody else could touch it...

OEM means Origianl Equipment Manufacturer, basicly he is asking if it is a factory pontiac hood and not from a third party.

The dealer wouldnt tear a T56 apart. They would replace it if there was an internal problem. Most guys at the dealership wouldnt know what to do to repair an internal tranny problem.

Someone said I didnt necessarily have to take it to the dealer. Whats with that? I thought only the dealer could work on it while under warranty.

Could anyone elaborate on that? And also, someone before had told me it sounded like the shift linkage just needed to be adjusted. I asked my good mechanic friend about that (but hes not really a transmission guy) and he said something about how the linkage is not adjustable cause its all one piece or something like that.

EDIT: Actually I think he also said something about it being all internal now too...

Could someone also elaborate on that more? Thanks guys. I am not a mechanic so dont use big jargon lol. The little pipe here goes here...etc LMAO thanks guys
