As a poor country boy, I grew up in a small town, pop 3000, with a few imports. My 89 Nissan Maxima, bone stock 5spd, was in the top 10 fastest cars. Next to the europeans owned by the doctors and a couple of Supercharged Mustangs and T/A's, from various year models. I would have rich kids show up in their new integras and give stories about how they would stomp one of the top 9 cars in town. Then after a short race where I would stomp them by 2 cars, they would say how cool my car was and how slow domestics were. From that point on I came to a realization. If you car is truely fast, be it domestic or import old or new, you know it, and you will only race on a track, with buddies, or when you see another truely bad@$$ car that you think you can keep up with. When your car is truely slow you try to make it look and sound like an insect from a Japaneese monster movie, and punch it at every light, even if their is a cop next to you, and tell your friends how bad you smoked Porsche Turbo in the lane next to you.
You have to give imports and sport compacts the credit they diserve. They tend to get better gas mileage, though in the HP/MPG ratio we have them beat greatly. Handling, they got us beat, hard- Take a Nissan 240sx bone stock against a T/A with 0.90g suspension on a back windy country road, and the 240sx would make it out minutes before the T/A could make it alive. And know that a guy in a civic is less g@y than a gage"

Just remember next time you see a Road Knat dont stomp it until it gets really annoying, save yourself a few racing tickets.

      Joe is so right >>>

Thats totally the truth about them ALWAYS being in denial. I've spanked plenty of them when I had my LT1 Z28. Everytime you beat them, they have some stupid excuse. Usually the best one is "I missed a shift." I even had a guy once tell me that his TURBO wasn't boosting like it should lol. No matter what happens when they lose, there was something WRONG w/ their car. Sometimes I almost think that they want you to smoke them. They want to see how fast real muscle is, and see what you have. I just laugh when I see them reving their little fart pipes. I get rice 24/7 now that I have a 2004 Subaru WRX STI. I just laugh at these morons. Once in awhile, I will just sit at the light and spool up, and they 9 out of 10 times will back down... If not, I just launch it hard (AWD) and they're still sitting at the light like WTF. It's rather amusing. Just ignore those morons!

          Hey Jay >>>

Unfortunately, I didn't have much choice... It came w/ those unsightly gold rims. I was going to fuss w/ the dealer to swap them for something else. However, I knew that I was getting the STI, so I ordered some chrome rims for it and I had them before I got the car. When I walked out of the dealership w/ the car, I headed straight to the tire shop and had them put on the new rims and tires. I'm just going to keep the ugly gold rims w/ brand new tires for the winter months. It all works out good I'll try to post some pics of the new ride soon!

                Heya

Not a prob Joe! I love this thing.. I really miss my Z28, but only being 21 and in your last year of College w/ a 5 hour commute to get to school and come home, I kinda needed something a little better in inclement weather conditions. The highways that you need to take to get to my university are all back country roads and they get awful in the winter. The performance and handling on this thing is truly amazing. It's crazy the amount of HP that a 4 banger can put out... The only downfall to this thing is the cost of insurance, OUTRAGEOUS. It would be bad enough on a regular WRX, but you say STI and it jumps! I'm going to try and get to the track within the next couple of weeks. I will post the results when I do so..... Has anyone here ever ridden in one of these things? I know you all hate these kinds of cars, but I must say, this thing is truly engineered well. You can't beat AWD and TURBO!

I agree... it's an amazing car. I definitely want one. However "You can't beat AWD and TURBO"... that's stretching it buddy, you better watch it

Last time I checked there was still no replacement for displacement

Ricers CAN be amusing. You know that tuner show with the two gay brother/clones ? - well they were interviewing some dumbcluck at the NOPI show with a Playstation system and 2 hood scoops and 1 roof scoop, then the show had a tech section where the expert said that the coffee cans actually caused the exhaust to cool down making it heavier and harder to push out so the engine actually lost horsepower from this mod. Whether this is actually true or not - I don't know - but it's a funny thing to have on an all import show, especially since it's the first mod that any wanna-be ricer goes for.

                      Hey Jay >>>

Hey man, I wasn't trying to slam you or anyone else on this board when I said "Turbo and AWD can't go wrong". I didn't mean it in the sense that I was better or faster than anyone, I Just simply meant that for MY needs and praticality in most 4 season states, it's not a bad way at all to go. You get the power, and you get the 4x4 for the snow. I love F-bodies, and I definately agree with you about the "No replacement for displacement" however, my 96Z28 was just NOT practical for me in the snow, thats why I went the WRX route. So, I'm sorry if what I said offended anyone, it certainly wasn't stated to offend anyone..

An experience that left me scratching my head....

I'm driving my Formula back from a shop, and its in complete race trim, except for the street wheels and tires (315 DR's in the back). The shop has just made a 617rwHP dyno pull. The exhaust is, well..... almost wide open. There is a Borla shorty straight thru muffler on each header collector, and nothing else..... this thing is rumbling like a Pro Stock car. In front of me is my buddy and his pickup truck, with the 30-gallon drum of C16 racing fuel we picked up at the shop. My nearly open exhaust is belching C16 fumes that make my eyes water.

OK... after 50 miles of freeway driving, we end up in crowded rush hour traffic on the local commuter parking lot known as Rt. 18. We are about 5 miles from E'town drag strip. Every once in a while, we get going fast enough that I actually have to shift into 2nd gear, and the TH400 is providing its usual neck snapping shifts. Along comes two guys in a Mitsubishi Eclipse convertible.... one of the newer ones with the with the washboard panels on the side..... and I don't think there were even any "turbo" models available on these. Yet the guy pulls up to me at the light and starts revving the engine like he was wanting to go heads up when the light went green. But, like we're in rush hour traffic, and there's maybe 200-ft to the traffic at a dead stop ahead of us. So he goes flying off at the green light while I just idle off the light, and he is probably convinced he has just defeated another weakling F-Body, probably posting on his favorite bulletin board "kill" forum how powerful his car is.

Funny thing was, at least one other import owner gave me a "thumbs up" as he sat next to me having his ears pummeled by the exhaust, and getting high on the exhaust fumes..... some import owners are cool, others are idiots.

I would LOVE to have any of the following imports:

                            -04' WRX (STi or not)
-Any year of the last gen turbo Supra
                            -Gen 3 turbo RX7
                            .........
Im just going to stop there.... I can go on all day listing the kinds imports Id like to own- Japanese or european, performance, or luxury. There are at least 50. I'm an enthusist- serious enthusists can appreciate just a little of everything- and the die hards, appreciate a lot of everything.

Regardless, we all have our faves. I happen to love american muscle... and most definitely, with as many cubes as possible. I will always have some sort of V8 muscle car in the garage, whether it is old or new. But I can assure you, At least one of us (my wife and I) will likely be driving an import to work and back.

I have a BALL in my daily commuter- 1987 RX7 Turbo. I beat a vast majority of the ricers out there, in my ancient eyesore of an import. It'll outhandle the T/A for sure, too. In fact, It'd run circles around it- even with the snows on it. Its bone stock, down to the paper filter and studded snow tires still running from winter. Great little car!

I'd like to have a WRX to drive daily, but I'm at that stage in my life, where I think I'd rather have a Lincoln LS V8 (ya, I know- Ford, but I like those cars), 04' Maxima, Lexus SC400, or something a bit more refined.... But it will ALWAYS have to have a little performance. The Mazda just doesn't feel right, at this stage in the game. 2 seaters are for single folks, or for those enjoying the kids being out of the house finally.

I guess the point Im making, is that I believe it is *generally* agreed that imports deserve credit where credit is due- and they deserve plenty in a lot of areas. Its that the general mindset young import drivers of the Fast & Furious generation have, REALLY give the poor genre a BAD reputation. It is a shame.

You get my thumbs up out of any car that can produce 300hp out of 4 cylinders, and 2.5 litres. They jump to 60 in 4.6 seconds- You have to recognize that. Hand that project to an engineer in the 60's, and they'd laugh you out of the building

wow, I really started a stir...I have to agree that not all import drivers are idiots, like I said, my best friend drives a Civic and he is hte most down the earth guy I know...mad respect to domestics. I just seem to run into the idiots, that's all...

Some imports are bad, take for example the skyline...one of my favs..but to try to make a Toyota Corolla go fast...I don't know, don't make sense to me...

Now and days...."everyone tries to be a racer"..blah blah blah.
