  • Difficulty starting the car - Please Help!

    Hello,

I've been having a gradually developing starting problem over the last year. I have tried many different things to fix it and have been to many different mechanics for assistance, etc. After the car has been sitting for awhile, it has a difficult time starting, like it will crank for about 10 sec or so and then finally fire up. The car runs fine once it's going. I've had new fuel injectors put on, a fuel filter, 2 different sets of plugs/wires, new opti, coil, various coil wires, new battery...problem is still here. It also seems that the car takes longer to start when I have less gas in the tank...i.e. like a half a tank...it seems to start somewhat faster when full.

If it was a dying fuel pump, would the car work ok while I'm driving for a year? I would assume that I would run into more problems if it was the fuel pump and not just starting.

Could it possibly be simply the starter all along? I just need some advice because I'm running out of money. There are no codes being thrown at all by the PCM.

Any ideas would be most helpful! Thanks!

If you suspect a fuel issue it would be a good idea to take fuel pressure reading when cranking the engine for the first time in the morning. Attach the gauge and turn the key to run. The fuel pump should pressurize the fuel rail at about 42-44 psi within 4 seconds. If not, fuel pump could be suspect, so could the regulator. If pressure immediatly bleeds down after the pump shuts off, leaking injectors or a bad check valve at the pump could be possible.

Just for kicks, have you tried a quick blast of starting fluid in the TB and then crank it? If it cranks immediatly and fires, you could definately have a fuel issue.

Thank you for the reply, much appreciated. I will try the tb starter fluid shot and see if it works. This car starts flaky it starts fine w/in an hour after running.. if it sits it goes kookoo.
