Is there anyway to make a custom cone filter intake with parts from a hardware store? I want to put an intake on the Bird but dont feel like spending $200+ for a couple pieces of plastic and a filter.

of course there is... you just have to take measurement..and then find the materials that work for you... be aware of things like heat and such which could melt plastics and some lighter metals too. you pay big bucks because someone has done the time and research to be at least fairly sure their product is safe and hopefully provides gains.

I made one for an 88 TPI bird. It worked O.K.

I was thinking of running some 4"ducting material from the oval openings on either side of my license plate, removing the old air filter and joining the two ducts into one and running it to the throttle body. I don't think this is gonna cost but about $100 for the parts and acouple of hours time.

Back in 93, I relocated the stock airbox to the bottom of the nose of my Formula. There's a plastic piece that unbolts from the bottom, sorta triangular in shape. I cut a hole in it for the neck of the box to peek through and ran ducting from Home Depot through the metal opening under the oringinal space where the filter box resided, to a 4" double male PVC fitting right to the stock elbow. (I had speed density). I cut away the last 6 inches of the plastic strip under the nose and that cleared the airway leading to my little 'ram-air' setup.

I actually saw the fruits of my labor at the track. Picked up a best of .15 secs and like half a mile an hour or something...but then again, I didn't build it at the track, so who truly knows if it worked or not, lol.

if you have a muffler shop in your area get them to take a 2 3/4 -3 1/2 in pipe and custom bend it to fit your car, and then you can polish the inside to let the air run smoother, and powder coat or idonize it to give it some color. when your done with that just put a decent after maktet cone filter on the end of that for some decient hp gains
