M6 or A4 in the 1/4

  • M6 or A4 in the 1/4

    so let me get some feedback from you guys. Say you have 2 of the same f-bods, except one is an a4 and 1 is an m6. Whos gonna get the best time in the 1/4. I always thought it was the automatic
    95 Trans am-3.73 posi, 1.6 rollers, cold air induc. flowmaster, no cat.'s, power programmer w/ 160 degree stat, torque arm, bbk underdrive pulley, 52mm throttle body.

    The auto is gonna launch harder, the manual is going to trap higher...

    It's gonna be close.

      auto- unless the driver is VERY VERY good

          It's funny, I have raced many similarly equipped f-bodies to me at the drag strip, and I have only lost twice...

          ...attribute some it to some of the drivers getting atrocious 60' times or manuals not shifting properly... but I have only lost twice... one of those losses was by 0.0603 seconds at the finish, but I was 0.2 seconds faster (I ran 13.1, he ran 13.3). The other was run last fall before I knew I had bent pushrods under the hood and I ran a lackluster 13.6. As a M6 driver, I have a pretty dern good W-L record against *similarly* modded cars of course, lol...

            Atuo , slap on a shift kit and a high stall torque converter (Sp... its late sry) and its all good !!

              What brand of high stall torque converter is good to get?

              1998 TA, mostly stock, SLP hood, ram air plastic intake, K&N Filter, Transgo Shift Kit, Kooks Stainless LT headers with Magna Flow Cats, Borla Exhaust (Medium plate setting), Kenny Brown SFCs, BMR Tower Strut Brace, 17" ROH RT Rims, 9.5 BFG KDWs, SLP Airlid, Smooth bore bellow, 85mm MAF. Nitrous to come. Action figure not included.

                Ive heard good things about the Vigilante Torque Converters, but they seem a little pricey!

                  I've posted this before, but I always recommend a CUSTOM TC. IT is impossible to build mass produced torque convertor that will have an accurate stall in all vehicles equipped with the same tranny. WHen I was running autos, I would go to the guy who builds all of the convertors for the shop. HE would ask the race weight of the vehicle, cam, intake, heads, and all other pertinent info, so that he could build a convertor that actually had an accurate stall speed in the car.

                    Stock for stock, if the M6 driver can work a clutch, he should be able to get off harder than the stock A4 guy.

                    If the A4 has a convertor, forget about it.

                      I think the fun factor is important to be considered... I love rowing through the gears. And since the manuals are harder to launch, I tend to play catch-up a little bit. There is nothing that brings a smile to my face as much as a come-from-behind victory mid-track

                        This is an age old argument that has been going on for a long long time. The auto is going to give you more consistent times along with more consistent launches (removes driver error with shifting)...I would definitely be more inclined to use the T400 for high HP applications (700hp) and above on a primarily 1/4 mile car. However, If the person driving the manual is good and gets a good 60' time as well as hits every shift, (stock for stock)...the guy with the auto is toast especially with the gearing advantage of the manual and the HP loss of the automatic. Although, even the best driver will launch the manual as well as shift through the gears different every time occasionally missing a shift thus going down to the auto from time to time. The advantages of the manual are obvious on a road course or any application that has turns, accelerating and decelerating. The T56 LT1/LS1 setup is pretty cool, and it gets my vote, but it is not for everybody. Most of it is about personal preference. However, NOT a big fan of the soft/spongy LS1 stock clutch...YUCK!!!...what were they thinking???

                          Sticks are fun, automatics are more consistant. I would prefer a stick car in a road race, an automatic for the dragstrip.
